It is widely cultivated across northern and southern China. Its leaves are excellent pig feed, its bast fiber is a high-grade raw material for papermaking, both its roots and seeds can be used as medicine, and its sap can treat skin diseases. Now let us take a look together at the prices of paper mulberry seeds and its cultivation methods!

How much does a jin of paper mulberry seeds cost?

The price of paper mulberry seeds is about 60 to 100 yuan per jin, but prices vary greatly depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin, market, and other factors. Paper mulberry is light-loving, highly adaptable, tolerant of drought and poor soil, tolerant of smoke and dust, and strongly resistant to air pollution. In production, it is commonly propagated by seeds or cuttings. To overcome the problem of female plants producing large amounts of juicy fruit that drops heavily at maturity and affects environmental sanitation, male plants can be used as scions to cultivate grafted seedlings for planting.

Sowing methods for paper mulberry

1. Site selection and land preparation: For paper mulberry seedling cultivation, choose a loam plot sheltered from the wind, facing the sun, loose and fertile, deep, and without water accumulation as the nursery site. Carry out land preparation and fertilization 1 month before sowing. During land preparation, apply 150 kg of crushed cake fertilizer or 1000 to 1200 kg of barnyard manure per mu.

2. Sowing time: Paper mulberry is generally sown in mid to late March. Before sowing, soak the seeds in clean water for 2 to 3 hours, remove them and let them dry, then mix them evenly with fine sand at twice the volume of the seeds and pile them indoors for germination. When 30% of the seeds have split open, they can be sown.

3. Sowing method: Paper mulberry is sown by drilling. The sowing rate is about 0.15 kg per mu. Mix the seeds and fine sand evenly, then scatter them into the furrow rows. Cover with soil just enough that the seeds are no longer visible. After sowing, cover with straw. When 30 to 40% of the seedlings emerge, remove the straw in batches in the afternoon.

Cultivation methods for paper mulberry

1. Planting density: Paper mulberry afforestation is not limited by conditions or topography. It can be planted in concentrated contiguous stands or squeezed into available spaces. It can be planted along ditches, ponds, reservoir banks, both sides of streams, and around houses. Planting density varies according to different forest management purposes.

2. Tending and management: Young paper mulberry stands are prone to growing weeds and shrubs, which affect tree growth. To make the stand uniform, grow vigorously, and improve the yield and quality of the trees, cutting weeds and removing shrubs should be carried out 1 to 2 times per year. When necessary, intertillage, weeding, and fertilization can be carried out in the stand.

3. Trunk cutting and renewal: After 2 years of field planting, paper mulberry should be cut at 30 to 50 cm from the main trunk to promote sprouting branches. Scattered and mature old trees should be cut and renewed at the appropriate time to promote the growth of branches, increase yield per unit area, and also make it easier to harvest leaves and bark.

4. Pest and disease control: The main pests and diseases of paper mulberry are sooty mold and longhorn beetles. For sooty mold, spray lime-sulfur mixture once every 15 days, for 2 to 3 consecutive times. For longhorn beetles, spray with a mixture of dichlorvos and trichlorfon at 800 times dilution, or use a cotton ball dipped in undiluted dichlorvos and insert it into the insect borehole.
