Forsythia Seed Latest Prices and Detailed Planting Methods
Forsythia, also known as Huanghuagan and Huangshoudan, is a deciduous shrub of the genus Forsythia in the Oleaceae family. It grows in hillside thickets, under forests or in grass clumps, or in valleys and sparse forests of mountain gullies. It is cultivated throughout China except the South China region, and is often used as an ornamental plant and an oilseed plant. Now let us take a look at forsythia seed prices and planting methods!
How much is a jin of forsythia seeds?
The price of forsythia seeds is about 50 to 60 yuan per jin, but prices vary depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin and other factors. Forsythia likes light and has a certain degree of shade tolerance. It likes a warm, humid climate and is also very cold-hardy, tolerant of drought and poor soil, and afraid of waterlogging. It is not particular about soil and can grow normally in neutral, slightly acidic or alkaline soil. It can be propagated by seed, cuttings, layering, division and other methods, but in production, seed and cutting propagation are the main methods.
Sowing methods for forsythia
1. Sowing time: Forsythia seeds germinate well at relatively high temperatures. Depending on seed storage and germination conditions, the cultivation time can be arranged in spring or winter. Spring sowing takes place in early to mid-April, and winter sowing is carried out before the ground freezes.
2. Seed treatment: First soak forsythia seeds in warm water at 40°C, then mix them with damp sand to promote germination, turning them frequently and adding water as needed. When some seeds have split open, they can be sown. Alternatively, after soaking in warm water, soak them in clean water for 24 to 48 hours, and sow after the seeds have fully absorbed water.
3. Post-sowing management: After sowing forsythia seeds, cover with a thin layer of soil, generally about 1 cm, and then cover with grass. Seedlings are afraid of waterlogging, so gradually remove the grass cover after emergence. When seedlings are 3 to 5 cm tall, thin and set them. In the same year, seedling height can reach about 50 cm.
Planting methods for forsythia
1. Site selection and land preparation: For forsythia planting, choose mountain land or gentle slope land with thicker soil, fertile and loose texture, good drainage, and shelter from wind and facing the sun for block cultivation, which helps cross-pollination between different plants and flowers and improves the seed-setting rate of forsythia. Generally, holes are dug for planting.
2. Fertilizing and planting: Before planting forsythia, apply fertilizer in the holes first. Apply decomposed barnyard manure or farmyard manure plus an appropriate amount of compound fertilizer in each hole. When planting, make the seedling roots spread out, firm the soil layer by layer, and cover the planting point with soil higher than the hole surface, so as to prevent the soil in the hole from sinking after rain, which is unfavorable for survival and growth.
3. Cultivation and weeding: During the seedling stage of forsythia, loosen the soil and weed frequently. After planting, cultivate and weed once each winter beside the forsythia trees. Weeds around the plants can be cut off or pulled out by hand.
4. Reasonable fertilization: After forsythia is planted, apply decomposed barnyard manure, cake fertilizer or farmyard manure each winter along with loosening the soil and weeding. The amount is 2 kg per young tree and 10 kg per fruiting tree. One additional fertilization can be applied before flowering in spring, and fertilization should also be applied once after pruning.
5. Drainage and irrigation management: Forsythia likes moisture and is afraid of waterlogging, so during planting, attention should be paid to keeping the soil moist. During dry periods, irrigate in furrows or water in time. During the rainy season, open ditches for drainage to avoid root rot caused by water accumulation.
6. Training and pruning: When young forsythia trees reach about 1 m tall, after leaf fall in winter, cut off the top shoot on the main trunk at 70 to 80 cm above the ground. Then in summer, through pinching, encourage more branches to develop, and from them select 3 to 4 well-developed lateral branches in different directions and train them as main branches.
