General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
Red tip photinia is the collective name for hybrids of the genus Photinia in the rose family (Rosaceae), also known as flame red, thousand-year red, Red Robin and so on. It is cultivated in East China, Central South China and Southwest China. Its new leaves are bright red in spring, turn green in summer, and stay red through autumn, winter and spring. The heavier the frost, the deeper the color, and the better the color at low temperatures. Its ornamental value is extremely high. Now let us take a look at the prices and planting methods of red tip photinia!

Propagation methods of red tip photinia

1. Cutting facilities: Red tip photinia is propagated by cuttings in a single-span greenhouse, which needs to be covered with greenhouse film plus a shade net. After the ground inside the greenhouse is leveled, a ground-level cutting seedbed is set up. The seedbed is about 100 cm wide, with 10-12 cm high baffles installed around it.

2. Site selection and fertilization: For red tip photinia, loose, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral soil that is convenient for irrigation and well drained is preferable. Apply 3000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu, plow the soil more than 25 cm deep, and apply insecticides to control underground pests.

3. Substrate disinfection: Spread a layer of fine sand at the bottom of the red tip photinia seedbed to facilitate drainage. The cutting substrate can be vermiculite plus peat, or clean yellow subsoil plus fine sand. The seedbed and substrate must be disinfected with fungicides and insecticides.

4. Cutting time: Red tip photinia is propagated by spring cuttings in early March, summer cuttings in early June, and autumn cuttings in early September. The cuttings use semi-lignified young shoots or lignified current-year branches, cut into one leaf and one bud, 3-4 cm long, with smooth cuts.

5. Cutting treatment: Treat the cuts of red tip photinia with a rooting agent to speed up rooting and increase the survival rate. The cutting depth should be 3 cm, with a density of 400 plants per sq m. After cutting, water thoroughly immediately, and spray the leaves with a mixed solution of carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl.

6. Post-cutting management: After cutting, red tip photinia should be checked frequently. Keep the substrate moisture content at about 60%. Shade from cutting until rooting and sprouting. After 15 days, some cuttings begin to root. When all cuttings have rooted and more than 50% have sprouted leaves, begin hardening the seedlings.

Planting methods of red tip photinia

1. Seedling selection: When buying red tip photinia seedlings, choose a supplier with a good reputation and quality after-sales service to ensure variety purity and reduce production risks. Choose seedlings with high product consistency, well-developed roots and undamaged roots.

2. Transplanting time: Red tip photinia is generally transplanted in spring from March to April and in autumn from October to November, depending on local climate conditions. The planting spacing should be determined according to the nursery retention time and cultivation goal.

3. Seedling transplanting: When transplanting red tip photinia seedlings, carefully remove the packaging or take off the nutrient pot to ensure the root soil ball remains intact. Dig holes at fixed points, pile fine soil around the roots, spread the roots out, press gently, and water thoroughly immediately after planting.

4. Water management: During the seedling recovery period after planting, pay special attention to water management. In case of continuous sunny days, water once 3-4 days after transplanting, and then about once every 10 days. In case of continuous rainy days, drain promptly.

5. Fertilization management: Red tip photinia can be fertilized 15 days after planting. In spring, apply 5 kg of urea per mu every half month. In summer and autumn, apply 5 kg of compound fertilizer per mu every half month. In winter, apply decomposed organic fertilizer once, at 1500 kg/mu.

6. Pest and disease control: Red tip photinia gray mold can be prevented by spraying 1000 times dilution of 50% carbendazim. Leaf spot disease can be controlled with 300-400 times dilution of 50% carbendazim or 300-400 times dilution of thiophanate-methyl. Scale insects can be sprayed with 200 times dilution of dimethoate emulsion or 800-1000 times dilution spray.
