Sowing Methods for Miniature Water Lilies
1. Sowing time: Miniature water lily seeds have no dormancy period. As long as the water temperature can be kept above 16°C, they can be sown in all four seasons. Under suitable temperature and light conditions, from sowing to flowering takes 50-60 days in spring and 60-80 days in autumn.
2. Seed treatment: The outer shell of miniature water lily seeds is hard and dense, so before soaking the seeds you must make an artificial opening. Rub the end with the small dent on rough cement ground until a layer of skin is worn through. Do not damage the kernel inside, and do not remove the shell, so that the seed can absorb water and swell.
3. Soaking seeds to promote germination: Soak the cracked miniature water lily seeds in warm water at about 20-40 degrees. For small-scale soaking at home, they can be placed in a thermos to keep warm. Generally, soaking to promote germination for 3-5 days is enough for them to sprout, with the germ emerging from the opening.
Planting Methods for Miniature Water Lilies
1. Transplanting: For planting miniature water lilies, choose a bottomless ceramic pot or plastic flower pot with a diameter of 45-75 cm. Add half a pot of garden soil or river pond mud to the pot. When transplanting, press the fine roots of the small lotus seedling into the mud, one plant per pot, and after transplanting add an appropriate amount of water, just enough not to submerge the lotus leaves.
2. Water: Miniature water lilies need different amounts of water at different growth stages. When first planted, do not water too much; too much water will hinder the growth of young roots and cause root rot. As the leaves grow larger, gradually add clear water. In summer, water once in the morning and once in the evening.
3. Fertilizing: Before planting miniature water lilies, mix a small amount of decomposed cake fertilizer liquid or bean bran or peanut bran into the potting soil as a base fertilizer, but do not apply excessive fertilizer. Generally, mixing a small amount of cake fertilizer powder and other base fertilizers into the growing medium at planting time is enough to meet their needs for the whole year.
4. Light: Miniature water lilies like abundant sunlight. If there is less than 4 hours of light per day, they cannot form flower buds. During the growth period, they need to be placed on a sunny balcony or in a sunny spot by a windowsill so they receive full sun. Around midday in summer and early autumn, appropriate shading is needed.
5. Pruning: When miniature water lily leaves grow too many and too dense, some leaves can be appropriately removed to help the plant breathe and ventilate, and this also helps with flowering. When growing multiple plants in the same container, if you find leaves competing for sunlight, you should divide them into separate pots in good time.
