Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) are a very common flower variety in our daily lives, and also the best-selling flower variety in the world. Anyone familiar with this flower knows that its flowering period is relatively long. Under normal natural growth conditions, the flowering period can last from April all the way to September, which means carnations will bloom not long after spring arrives, so care during winter is especially important. So how should we care for carnations in winter?

1. Light

Carnations are a light-loving plant, and in winter you can let them enjoy light to their heart's content, because the light intensity in winter is not strong to begin with, so there is no need to worry about the scorching sun affecting carnations. If you encounter days without sun, you can use a fluorescent lamp as a substitute, though of course it is fine not to use one either.

2. Temperature

Carnations are relatively tolerant of low temperatures, but if the temperature drops below 9°C, the growth of carnations will be inhibited. So in winter we should preferably use certain methods to raise the temperature. If that cannot be done, you can also cover them with film, or simply send them into a greenhouse.

3. Water

When watering carnations in winter, you must pay attention to the amount. Remember never to let water accumulate in the potting soil, otherwise the roots soaking in water will lead to root rot. Of course, if conditions permit, you can also use drip irrigation, so that overwatering is less likely to occur.

4. Fertilizing

In winter, you can fertilize carnations once every half a month. The choice of fertilizer is quite varied; some common options such as diluted urea water or the ash from burnt grass can all provide nutrients to them. But do not fertilize too heavily; a light fertilizer is enough.

5. Pests

Generally speaking, due to the lower temperatures in winter, pests and diseases will also be greatly reduced, but we should still do a good job of prevention and control. For example, the fairly familiar leaf spot disease may appear in winter. Use a fungicide on carnations once every week or half a month, and also pay attention to keeping things dry during regular care.

The above are some key points for caring for carnations in winter. Carnations prefer fertile soil, but at the same time it must also have good water permeability and ventilation. Carnations usually bloom before Mother's Day, and they are also a great gift to give to your mother!
