Saffron crocus is one of the precious ornamental flowers; when it blooms it is graceful and elegant, and a faint delicate fragrance drifts through the air. During cultivation it is inevitably troubled by diseases, which affects its ornamental beauty. Below, the editor introduces the common diseases and control methods.

1. Root rot

Root rot mainly occurs at the seedling and flowering stages; when it strikes, the plant wilts and turns pale yellow until it dies.

Control method: promptly pull out the diseased plants and burn them, scatter some quicklime near the diseased plants to prevent the virus from spreading, and replace the soil where the diseased plants were grown.

2. Rust

When rust strikes, it looks like rusted metal, with rust-colored spots appearing, which affects the ornamental beauty; it mainly harms the leaves.

Control method: disinfect the seeds or corms before planting, promptly deal with diseased leaves to avoid infecting other plants, and spray pesticide at regular intervals to eliminate the disease.

3. Sclerotinia rot

Sclerotinia rot mainly occurs at the seedling stage of the plant, harming the corm and causing the whole plant to rot.

Control method: remove injured or diseased corms to avoid the spread of the pathogen and greater losses; after removing the diseased area, spray with a 500-fold dilution of 50% thiophanate wettable powder to prevent the disease from flaring up again.

4. Mosaic disease

When mosaic disease strikes, the plant becomes dwarfed, the leaf shape becomes twisted and deformed, and yellow striped spots appear on the leaves; in the late stage of the disease the leaves necrose on a large scale. At the flowering stage the flowers are relatively small, and a severe case can prevent it from flowering at all.

Control method: when planting, choose excellent varieties with good plant vigor and strong disease resistance.

The above are several of the more common diseases during saffron crocus cultivation and their control methods. Have you learned them, friends? When you find diseased plants, be sure to deal with them promptly, otherwise they will affect other healthy plants.
