The Chinese hibiscus is a relatively popular ornamental flower, also known as zhujin and China rose. Its flowers are large and brightly colored, and it is commonly known among the people as “big red flower”. The Chinese hibiscus has strong sprouting ability. In the process of growing it, in order to maintain a beautiful tree shape and a large number of flowers, we usually prune it. So how should we prune it? Below, the editor shares with everyone the pruning methods for Chinese hibiscus.

Pruning methods

1. Pruning of young seedlings: During the growing process, with just a little care, the Chinese hibiscus will grow quickly and vigorously, but the branches will grow very messily and the tree shape will not be beautiful. Therefore, in order to ensure a beautiful tree shape, we pinch the growing tips when the seedling is about 15cm tall, keeping only 2-3 branches, and carry out a second pinching after the new branches have grown for a period of time. This can promote branching in the plant, and afterward the number of flowers will also be greater.

2. Pruning of large seedlings: After the Chinese hibiscus has grown, we need to shape it according to its growth state, pruning away thin and weak branches and unreasonable branches affected by pests and diseases. If the branches grow too densely, they also need to be pruned, as this can improve the plant's ventilation and light penetration. The best time for pruning is preferably chosen during the plant's dormant period.

3. Pruning of flowering branches and old plants: Flowering branches are pruned after the flowers fade, cutting off the branches whose flowers have already withered. This can avoid the consumption of nutrients and provide sufficient nutrients for the next flowering. Old plants should be heavily pruned once every one or two years, trimming some old branches, which can promote the sprouting of new branches.

Precautions for pruning

When pruning, we should decide whether to prune according to the plant's growth state. During the pruning process, be careful, mainly not to damage other branches, and do not prune excessively, as excessive pruning will affect the plant's flowering. Try to choose the plant's dormant period for pruning, and after pruning, apply water and fertilizer in time, first to replenish what was consumed, and second to speed up its growth and promote branching.
