Rhododendron pulchrum is a subtype of rhododendron, bearing pink trumpet-shaped flowers. Mass plantings of Rhododendron pulchrum have great ornamental value and are the first choice for many scenic spots, with strong demand. Currently, all the plants circulating on the market are artificially cultivated varieties, so how should this flower, which has such striking ornamental value, be planted?

1. Site selection for planting

Site selection should be based on the habits of Rhododendron pulchrum; a warm, semi-shaded and moist environment is what Rhododendron pulchrum prefers. The planting point for its seedlings should preferably have some shade nearby, so that they can avoid the assault of the scorching sun to a certain extent. As for the soil, do not use soil with too high a clay content, as it is not conducive to the expansion of its root system. Normal mountain slopes and hillside land can all be used for planting; flat ground is not necessarily required. The soil should be broken up as much as possible to avoid the accumulation of large clods of earth, which is not conducive to early growth.

2. Heat preservation and light control

During the seedling stage, Rhododendron pulchrum has relatively high temperature requirements; the temperature for its normal growth needs to be above 20°C, and for at least about 2-3 consecutive weeks. When planting, the rainy season should be avoided; generally, it can start around April. If it is any later, the midday temperature will be too high and the seedlings will easily die. At this time, under normal circumstances, shading is generally not needed for light. If the seedlings appear withered and languid after midday, it indicates that the light is too strong and temperature control is needed. After one month of planting, there is basically no need to worry too much about these two aspects.

3. Water management

There are two peak demand periods for Rhododendron pulchrum. One is the initial planting period when new shoots first emerge; at this time, the water demand is relatively high, used to ensure its growth. The other is the high-temperature period in summer, when evaporation is fast and a large amount of water is needed to cool down and maintain growth. At other times, it can be controlled to once every 2 weeks, depending on local conditions. During these two periods, it is roughly controlled to once a week, ensuring that the soil 3 cm below the surface feels somewhat moist. With sprinkler irrigation, more water is needed; with root irrigation, less can be used.

4. Fertilizer use

The Rhododendron pulchrum plant is not tall and has low fertilizer requirements, so frequent applications of thin fertilizer are sufficient. During the seedling stage, in addition to applying some farmyard manure, some leaves can also be collected and placed at its roots, first to keep warm and second to add a little compost fertilizer. Later, an organic compound fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium can be applied, controlled to about once every 20 days. Rhododendron pulchrum basically does not need topdressing during the flowering period; at this time its energy demand is not high. After the flowering period ends, growers can prepare some nutrient solution to supplement it.

The above is the general process for planting Rhododendron pulchrum. As an ornamental plant, it requires relatively little management effort and has strong adaptability. Do you understand a little about it now?
