Detailed guide to the latest poinsettia propagation methods, easy to learn at a glance
Poinsettia is a common potted plant in daily life. Many people care for it well during cultivation and it often grows so vigorously it fills the pot, so they want to propagate new plants. The propagation method used for poinsettia is cuttings, and branches, softwood shoots, old roots and semi-hardwood branches can be used as cuttings; there is also layering. Now let's take a look at the introduction to poinsettia propagation methods with the editor.
1. Cutting method
1. Branch cuttings
Use clean scissors to cut off healthy, vigorous branches, trim away the woody part and the split outer layer, wash off the white milky sap flowing from the cut, and apply wood ash or fresh clay, after which they can be stuck for cuttings. The cutting depth should preferably be within 2.5 cm, and it is best to do this in the early morning, because at this time the cuttings have the most water and the survival rate is high.
2. Softwood cuttings
Cut 6-8 cm branches, remove the lower leaves, leaving only 3-4 leaves at the top, then soak them in clean water for 2-3 minutes and they can be stuck for cuttings. During the rooting period, keep the leaves moist; generally they will root and survive in about half a month.
3. Old root cuttings
Poinsettia is repotted once every year in March-April. When repotting, the old roots can be trimmed into small sections about 10 cm long, and after disinfection they can be stuck for cuttings. Generally after about one month of care they will sprout and grow leaves.
4. Semi-hardwood cuttings
Cut 10 cm long one-year-old branches, cut off all the tips and leaves, apply wood ash and let them dry, then stick them into fine sand, water once thoroughly, and roots will form after about 20 days.
2. Layering method
Choose vigorous, lignified one-year-old branches, girdle them by removing a ring of bark about 3-4 cm wide, remove the phloem, lightly scrape the cambium and wrap with wet sphagnum moss. At this time the upper and lower ends should be tied tightly with plastic film. This method should preferably not be carried out later than July, and is best done in April. When roots form at the girdled area, it can be separated from the mother plant to become a new plant and planted separately.
