What are the soil requirements for growing roses? The latest planting guide
Rose growth also has certain requirements. In the overall environment, besides temperature, moisture and light, there are also certain requirements for the soil. It grows well and grows best in suitable soil. Some characteristics of the soil must also match the characteristics that roses need. Only then can you know what kind of soil is best to prepare when planting roses. Let us analyze it together now.
1. Soil nutrients
The requirement for nutrients in the soil is fertile soil, rich in humus, soil accumulated from fallen leaves, or soil that absorbs farmyard manure well. Soil that is naturally black generally has relatively rich nutrients and a very high humus content. After the remains of plants and soil organisms from many years decay, fertile soil is formed. Such soil often has earthworm activity.
2. Soil terrain
The soil is very good, but the terrain must be good too. It cannot be in a low-lying area or a place with a high groundwater level. It should be in a slightly higher place with a low groundwater level, preferably a sunny hillside, because this makes drainage convenient and gives plenty of sunlight for good growth. But pay attention to whether there is a water source nearby. Being a bit drier is also better, as there is no need to worry about water accumulation, but the hillside should not be too high, because if it is too high, watering is inconvenient.
3. Soil texture
Generally, heavy clay or compacted soil is not acceptable, and clay soil is also not good: it condenses when it rains, and after the weather clears it dries and hardens. Such soil is not breathable, or after watering, the water cannot penetrate well, the roots cannot fully receive water, and water easily accumulates in the upper layer, harming the roots. Some sandy soils are also not good; water drains away very quickly, and when the weather clears it becomes dry. They do not retain water or fertilizer. The best is sandy loam soil. With this kind of soil, water can gradually penetrate and fertilizer will not be lost. It will not harden, and it will not become too dry.
4. Soil properties
The acidity and alkalinity of the soil directly determine whether roses can be planted in the soil. For example, roses are most suitable for planting and growing in neutral to alkaline soil or slightly acidic soil. Therefore, they cannot be planted in saline-alkali land or salinized land. They grow poorly in purely alkaline soil. They cannot be planted in purely acidic soil either. Growth will also be affected. Neutral soil is very suitable for rose growth.
Roses have the above requirements for the soil in which they are grown, and this is specifically determined by the growth characteristics of roses. Specifically, after planting, you can observe which soil conditions they adapt to. Generally this is correct. But actual situations should be analyzed on a case-by-case basis.
