The Best Time to Repot Azaleas and Points to Note
Azaleas are world-famous ornamental flowering plants, with a wide variety of cultivars and a riot of colors. Among them, the red azalea, also known as yingshanhong, turns whole hillsides red when in bloom, appealing to both refined and popular tastes. For home growing, pot culture is preferable. Because potted plants are limited by their potting soil, they need to be repotted every so often. So when is the best time to repot azaleas? What should you pay attention to when repotting? Let's take a look.
1. Repotting time
Azaleas are generally repotted once every two years, otherwise their growth and development will be affected. But each time you repot, you also need to choose the right moment. If you blindly pick a time to repot, it may even lead to the plant's death. The best time to repot is in spring and autumn, when azaleas are in their peak growing season; repotting in sunlight gives the highest survival rate.
2. Choosing potting soil
Each time you repot an azalea, choose a suitable container according to the size of the plant, so that its roots can spread out better and it can produce more brilliant flowers. For the soil, it is best to prepare it based on the original root ball soil of the azalea. You can also mix leaf mold, garden soil, tree bark and coarse sand to make a new potting mix, ensuring good permeability and drainage, so as to avoid water accumulating at the bottom of the pot and causing root rot. It also lets the roots quickly adapt to the new potting soil, which is good for the azalea's growth.
3. Removing from the pot and repotting
First lay the potted plant on its side, press down hard with both feet to separate the soil ball from the pot, and try not to damage the roots. Then rinse the roots with clean water. If you find rotten roots, deal with them promptly; keep only the main roots, so that the root system can adapt to the new potting soil as quickly as possible. When repotting, cut away one third of the plant's soil ball, spread a layer of growing medium over the drainage layer, then place the plant in the pot so that it is about 3 cm from the pot wall, fill the gaps with the prepared growing medium, press it down gently, water thoroughly, and place it in a semi-shaded spot. After 2 weeks it can be managed normally.
4. Points to note
Stop watering one or two days before repotting, so the potting soil dries out and becomes slightly compacted. When repotting, keep at least two thirds of the old soil around the plant. Before repotting, prune off the azalea's flowers, diseased and weak branches, and dense branches; this greatly reduces the azalea's water transpiration and energy consumption. After repotting, when providing shade, pay attention to keeping it warm and humid. It is recommended to cover it with plastic film, which acts like a greenhouse and helps it recover, take root and sprout faster.
