How to Grow Narcissus in Water? A Detailed Guide to the Latest Care Methods
The narcissus is elegant and is a very beautiful potted flowering plant. There are many ways to grow narcissus: water culture, soil culture, and sand culture are all possible, and in everyday life water culture of narcissus is one of the more widely used growing methods. So how should narcissus be grown in water? Follow along with the editor to see the detailed introduction.
1. Bulb Selection
The first step in the water culture method for narcissus is choosing the bulb. From the outside, you should pick a healthy, plump, flat-shaped bulb; if there are more small bulblets beside the main bulb, that means the narcissus has more flower buds. The outer skin of the narcissus bulb should be chosen for its bright color, the lines on the scale skin should be widely spaced, and the bulb should be firm and have a certain weight, giving a solid feel when gently pinched with the fingers. If the bottom of the bulb is sunken in a small and deep way, that means this kind of bulb has a higher water content and is not recommended for selection.
2. Processing and Potting
The second step in water culture of narcissus is processing the bulb before potting. Peel off the outer skin of the selected bulb, remove the protective mud and dead roots at the base, then use a small knife to peel off 3-4 layers of outer skin from the bulb so that the flower buds of the bulb are exposed, but when peeling, be careful not to damage the flower buds. After peeling, place the bulb in clean water for one night, then it can be placed directly into a shallow narcissus pot, with water added to submerge one third of the bulb.
3. Light and Temperature
During the water culture of narcissus, it must be given especially ample light. During the day it should be placed in a sunny spot, and at night it can be placed under lamplight. This not only prevents the narcissus stems and leaves from growing leggy, but also makes the leaves short, wide and thick, sturdy, with a deep green leaf color and richly fragrant flowers. Narcissus grows well in a 10-15 degree environment, and about 45 days is enough for it to bloom, with the flowering period lasting over a month.
4. Fertilizer and Water Management
The most important thing in water culture of narcissus is fertilizer and water. When first potted, the narcissus can have its water changed once a day, then once every 2-3 days, and after the flower buds have formed, once a week. When growing in water, it is best not to use tap water; pollution in tap water can cause the narcissus bulb to rot. Generally spring water, well water, and rainwater are all fine; if there is really none available, tap water can be used after being exposed to the sun. Water-cultured narcissus generally can only be fertilized after 5-7 days, because only then have the roots grown mature, and fertilizing will not harm the roots, but during these few days do not change the water.
