If you are growing gardenia in a pot, repotting is definitely necessary. When the plant outgrows its current pot, root growth will be restricted, and the plant's growth and flowering will also be affected. So how do you repot it, and what should you pay attention to when repotting? Let's take a look together next!

1. Take out the roots

Tilt the pot and tap around its sides with moderate force so that the soil separates from the pot as a whole. Tap the bottom too. If it feels loose, set the pot upright, hold the base of the stem, and gently lift upward. If it moves, take the whole plant out directly; if it does not come out, keep tapping, and try to damage the roots as little as possible. After taking it out, check for rotten roots and prune dry, rotten, or blackened roots. Do not break up the root ball.

2. Prepare for repotting

Prepare a larger pot, wash and disinfect it, and let it dry. Put in large clean pieces of broken tile, spread a layer of clean coarse sand, and add prepared nutrient soil. The soil needs to be disinfected and is best if it has been sun-dried. Fill the pot one-third full with soil, then place the gardenia's root ball in. Continue adding nutrient soil until the root ball is completely covered, leaving about 2 cm from the pot rim. Water evenly; once water flows out from the drainage holes at the bottom, that is enough.

3. Management and maintenance

⟦NL>After repotting, the roots will gradually spread as you water, and the root system will have more room to grow. But be careful with care. Within one week after repotting, mist once or twice a day, but do not water directly; too much moisture makes it easy for water to accumulate and cause root rot. For the time being, keep it in a bright, indirect light environment, and after one week return to normal care.

4. Precautions

Do not repot in summer, and do not repot in April during the plum rain season. Do not repot during the flowering period; once flower buds have formed, repotting cannot be started. Once the plant's growth is stable, stop repotting and only change the potting soil. The new soil added after repotting is best the same as the original soil, so the plant can adapt to growth more easily. It is best to change the soil in early spring. After changing the soil, keep it warm; do not maintain it at low temperatures.
