Hibiscus is a perennial flower. It can be grown either in the ground or in pots. Its blooms are extremely beautiful, with gorgeous flowers that change three times in a day: at dawn in early spring the flower color is pinkish white, by noon it is light red, and at sunset it turns deep red. So how should hibiscus be grown? Let's take a look.

1. Soil

Fertile, moist, well-drained sandy loam is best for the growth of hibiscus. Soil rich in humus plus river sand or coal cinder is also very suitable for the growth of hibiscus. However, soil that is relatively heavy in clay or prone to waterlogging is not conducive to the growth of hibiscus, so when growing it you must choose soil with relatively good drainage.

2. Light and temperature

Hibiscus likes light but also tolerates partial shade. Sufficient light will make its branches and leaves grow strong, and with sufficient light during the flowering period the flowers will be larger and more beautiful. Flowering in autumn requires sufficient light, and potted hibiscus grown indoors should be moved promptly to a balcony or similar place to encourage normal flowering. Hibiscus is a frost-tolerant plant. Although excessively low temperatures will cause its above-ground plant to wither, it will still grow new seedlings again after the beginning of spring, so in winter there is no need to worry about it dying.

3. Watering and fertilizing

Hibiscus relatively likes to grow in a moist environment. In daily care we need to keep the soil moist and must not let it dry out completely. In summer it can be watered once or twice a day, generally once in the morning and once in the evening, and the number of waterings should be chosen according to the size of the flower pot. Each watering must soak through. On rainy days watering can be reduced, while on sunny days it should be at least once. Sufficient fertilizer can make hibiscus grow better. Generally, hibiscus grown in the ground can be fertilized according to soil fertility, while potted hibiscus is generally given a compound fertilizer topdressing once every half month to maintain what it needs for growth and flowering.

4. Points to note

Although hibiscus is frost-tolerant, when the winter temperature is very low it can still freeze to death. If some cold protection measures are still taken in winter, you can cover it with a plastic bag and cut a few small holes for ventilation, or we can place it indoors in scattered light or on a semi-enclosed balcony, which can help it overwinter safely.
