Haworthia cooperi succulents have crystal-clear colors, just like little pieces of jade, and are extremely beautiful. There are also many varieties, with common ones including large Haworthia cooperi, Haworthia cooperi var. pilifera, Haworthia cooperi 'Dai', ice lantern Haworthia cooperi, and more. So how should Haworthia cooperi be cultivated? Let's take a look.

1. Light

Haworthia cooperi originates from southern Africa and prefers a cool, semi-shaded environment. It is drought-tolerant but not cold-tolerant, and it dislikes high temperatures, humidity and harsh sun exposure. During the growing season, it should be given plenty of light. If it is too shaded, the plant will become loose in shape and the leaves will grow thin and long. However, if the light is too strong, the leaves will grow poorly and turn light brown, and sometimes direct strong light will even cause leaf scorch, leaving scars. Generally, in spring, autumn and winter, it can be grown on a balcony, but in summer it should not be placed in the sun for exposure. It should be properly shaded, and bright scattered light is sufficient.

2. Watering

When watering Haworthia cooperi, master the principle of “do not water until dry, and when watering, water thoroughly.” Avoid water accumulation, and do not let it be rained on, especially prolonged rain, as this will cause root rot in Haworthia cooperi. However, it should not be kept dry for a long time either. Although this will not cause the plant to die, it will cause the leaves to shrivel and the leaf color to become dull, reducing its ornamental value. Therefore, water only after the soil has dried, and water thoroughly each time. As for how to judge whether the soil is dry, when it is dry 3-4 cm down when you poke it with your hand, that means it is time to water.

3. Fertilizing

Haworthia cooperi does not like fertilizer, so it is not necessary to fertilize when repotting each year. Generally, during the spring and autumn growing season, apply a thin phosphorus- and potassium-containing fertilizer solution 2-3 times. During the growing season, for plants with vigorous growth, apply once a month a fully decomposed thin fertilizer solution or a low-nitrogen, high-potassium compound fertilizer. Newly potted plants and weakly growing plants do not need fertilizing, and there is also no need to fertilize during the dormant period of high temperatures in summer or low temperatures in winter. Fertilizing is best done on a clear morning or in the evening.

4. Precautions

The root system of Haworthia cooperi secretes acidic substances, which can cause soil acidification and lead to root aging and hollowing. It should be repotted once every spring and autumn. When repotting, cut off the aged and hollow roots, and also cut off overly long roots. Keep the thick, strong white new roots, then replant with cultivation soil. The planting soil should be loose, fertile, and well-draining and breathable. Haworthia cooperi flowers are not very ornamental. If you are not saving seeds, you can remove the flowers to avoid consuming too many nutrients and affecting the plant's growth.
