In one year the autumn atmosphere is rich, and the fragrance of osmanthus spreads for ten li. It is now the osmanthus blooming season. We all know osmanthus; when it blooms, its fragrance is rich and carries for ten li, and it is also one of the common plants in our lives. So do you know how osmanthus is propagated? Let us take a look together below.

1. Seed propagation

Osmanthus seeds can be sown in either spring or autumn. Before sowing, the ground must first be prepared well and base fertilizer applied. When sowing, place the seed hilum sideways to avoid bending the seed's radicle and young stem, which would later affect the growth of the seedlings. After sowing, cover with some fine sandy soil, then cover with a grass mat, pay attention to shading and moisture retention, and often keep the soil moist. Seedlings can emerge in the same year. The small seedlings that grow from seeds are called seedling plants, but to see seedling plants bloom requires at least more than ten years, so osmanthus seed propagation is generally used to cultivate seedling plants.

2. Cutting propagation

Seed propagation takes too long, so cutting propagation can be used; it only takes four years to bloom, much shorter than the time required for seed propagation. Before sprouting in spring, cut off one-year-old healthy and robust branches; the branch length only needs to be about 5-10 cm. Remove the lower leaves and keep 2-3 leaves on the upper part. Then insert them into culture soil. After cutting, water promptly, and at the same time provide shading treatment, keep the temperature at 20-25 degrees, and after two months they can take root and be transplanted.

3. Layering propagation

In addition to cuttings, layering can also be chosen. In spring or early summer, select a thick low-trunk mother plant, choose from its lower 1-2 year old branches a part that bends easily, use a sharp blade to girdle it until reaching the woody part of the branch, then press it into 3-5 cm of soil, fix the branch into the depression, and leave only the branch tip and leaves outside. Pay attention to keeping the soil moist, and wait until the branch has rooted in autumn before cutting it off and transplanting it.

4. Grafting propagation

For the grafting rootstock, glossy privet or Chinese ash can be chosen. Before sprouting in spring, select cuttings about 10-12 cm from plants 1-2 years old, clean and disinfect them, then graft. Cut off the lower leaves of the cuttings and leave only 3 to 5 upper ones. Slant-cut chips have a high survival rate. Remember to make the slant cut at one third of the rootstock.
