Poinsettia Cutting Methods and Timing Explained in Detail
Poinsettia is grown on a relatively large area in China, and when growing poinsettia, the most commonly used propagation method is cutting propagation. Whether old branches or young shoots are used, cuttings can be taken, and the survival rate is also relatively high. When carrying out cutting propagation, we need to choose different cutting branches and timing according to the actual situation. So how should poinsettia be propagated by cuttings? And when should the cuttings be taken? Now let's take a look together with the editor!
1. Cutting Time
The cutting time for poinsettia should be chosen according to the cutting branches. If the cutting branches are semi-lignified semi-hardwood branches, then cuttings should be taken from March to May each year, when the temperature is around 15°C. If softwood cuttings are used, then it should be done at the end of March, and as long as the temperature is kept above 20°C, it can be carried out all the way until September. Finally, if the cutting branches are old roots, the cutting time should be around March to April.
2. Cutting Methods
1. Semi-hardwood cuttings
⟦NL>First, we need to select good branches, mainly one-year-old or so semi-lignified branches. The length should be controlled at more than about 10cm, and then the leaves at the lower end of the branch should be cut off. Then cut the base of the branch diagonally into a slanted surface and disinfect it to avoid bacterial infection. After treating the branch, insert it directly into the soil. Then keep the temperature at around 23°C and water thoroughly. Under normal conditions, roots will form after three weeks. Each time, several can be inserted, and then a branch with better growth can be selected from them for planting.
2. Softwood cuttings
For softwood cuttings, the branches should mainly be current-year branches, and about 6 leaves should be kept on the branch. The length should be controlled at about 7cm, and then half of the leaves should be removed. After cutting off the leaves, soak the branch in water for about two minutes to prevent the sap in the branch from flowing out of the wound, then insert it directly into the soil. After softwood cuttings are taken, attention should be paid to maintaining a moist soil environment, watering frequently, and doing a good job of shading. Under normal conditions, roots will form after about half a month.
3. Old root cuttings
If it is a potted poinsettia, then repotting and changing the soil must be done every year. For poinsettias cultivated for many years, many old roots will be produced. Therefore, when repotting, we can choose some discarded old roots for cuttings, cutting the old roots into sections of about 10cm. Then disinfect them and insert them into the soil. It is best to ensure that the old roots have a small amount of fibrous roots. Try to insert them relatively deep to provide sufficient space for the roots to extend. Under normal conditions, new leaves will grow after about one month.
The above is a brief introduction to poinsettia cutting methods and timing. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only, and we hope it can help everyone!
