Reasons for Drooping Leaves in Peace Lilies and How to Fix Them
The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) has upright, elegant flower stems and leaves that grow straight up, giving it a tidy shape, making it a common ornamental plant. However, some growers notice their peace lily's leaves drooping during cultivation, making it look listless. So what should you do when a peace lily's leaves droop? Let's look at the causes and how to handle them.
1. Insufficient watering
When growing a peace lily, watering is a skill. If you don't water enough, the plant will lack water and dry out, which is extremely harmful to its growth. This will not only cause the leaves to droop but also lead to other problems, such as green edges on the spathes, yellowing leaves, and wilting.
Solution: Water promptly to maintain moisture, and control the amount given each time. Light, frequent watering is best, generally 2-3 times a day, and recovery usually occurs in about a week. After that, be careful not to let it go without water for long periods; water flexibly according to the climate and the plant's actual condition.
2. Poor light
A peace lily can survive in a dark environment for a long time; its shade tolerance is very strong, but that does not mean it can go without sunlight. If it is kept in a dark environment for a long time, insufficient light will eventually cause its leaves to droop.
Solution: At this point, move the plant promptly to a bright location for care so it receives plenty of light. If you later want to keep it indoors, you can use artificial lighting to supplement light and ensure it gets enough.
3. Potting soil problems
If the soil used for care is rather heavy and clayey, it easily becomes poorly aerated and drains badly. This causes the peace lily's roots to breathe poorly and be unable to absorb nutrients and water normally; drooping will also occur at this point, and in severe cases it will not bloom.
Solution: For leaf drooping caused by potting soil problems, replace the soil promptly with a loose mix. Also note that you should repot once every 1-2 years to keep the potting soil loose and aerated.
4. Sudden environmental changes
When conditions such as light, temperature, and ventilation suddenly change, the peace lily's growth is also affected. If the environmental change is significant, the peace lily's leaves will become soft and droop, for example when exposed to cold wind.
Solution: While ensuring the ambient temperature, move the peace lily indoors to a warm environment in advance in late autumn, to avoid poor growth caused by a cold wave.
