A Detailed Guide to Evening Primrose Cultivation Methods and Precautions
Evening primrose is a plant that blooms at night, just like the night-blooming cereus. It has many uses, with relatively high ornamental and medicinal value. Because it releases a pleasant fragrance when it blooms at night, many people like to grow it as a potted plant at home. So how should evening primrose be cultivated? Let us take a look.
I. Cultivation Methods
1. Soil
Choose a suitable flower pot according to the size of the evening primrose, then lay a 2-3 cm thick layer of expanded clay pellets at the bottom, sprinkle a 1-2 cm layer of organic fertilizer on top, and then cover it with soil. The soil should be loose and breathable, such as paddy soil or pond mud, mixed with vermiculite and river sand.
2. Potting and Planting
Plant the evening primrose seedlings in the soil, firm the soil, then water appropriately, and keep them in a cool, shaded place for one week. After the seedlings grow leaves, increase the light exposure.
3. Suitable Temperature and Light
Evening primrose is cold-tolerant but not tolerant of high temperatures. The suitable growing temperature is 18-25 degrees. Try to keep it within this temperature range. In summer, pay attention to providing appropriate shade to avoid excessively high temperatures. In winter, when temperatures are low, provide appropriate insulation to prevent frost damage. To make it produce bright flowers, you need to ensure sufficient light. In spring, autumn and winter, it can be managed directly in a sunny spot. In summer, because of high temperatures and strong light, appropriate shading is needed or it should be placed in a semi-shaded environment.
4. Watering
After potting, water promptly. The first watering should be thorough. After that, follow the principle of watering only when the soil is dry, and watering thoroughly when you do. Each watering should wait until the soil has dried out completely to avoid repeated waterlogging. During the rainy season, try to avoid water accumulating in the soil, otherwise root rot is very likely.
5. Fertilizing
In addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer when potting, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once every 15-20 days during normal care to avoid fertilizer burning the roots. You can dilute decomposed fertilizer with water and apply it along the edge of the flower pot.
II. Precautions
If evening primrose is transplanted from elsewhere, after it is planted and has recovered, pinch off the growing tips once to encourage branching and dwarf the plant, increasing the number of flowers. About half a month before evening primrose overwinters, fertilization should be stopped, because in the low-temperature season evening primrose enters dormancy and root activity basically stops. Fertilizing at this time will cause fertilizer damage.
