A Detailed Guide to Growing and Caring for Winter Jasmine
Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) is the earliest flowering plant among all flowers, which is why it is called winter jasmine. Its flowers are dignified and elegant, with an extraordinary temperament, and it is also highly adaptable. Many people like to grow winter jasmine as a bonsai. So how should winter jasmine be grown? Let's take a look together.
I. Growing Methods
1. Soil
Winter jasmine prefers acidic soil, so when cultivating it, it is best to choose loose, fertile, well-draining acidic soil. Clay soil or alkaline soil should not be chosen, as this is very unfavorable for the growth and development of winter jasmine. Of course, you can also mix your own nutrient soil using 6-7 parts garden soil, 2-3 parts compost soil, and 1-2 parts fine sand.
2. Light and Temperature
Winter jasmine grows best in an environment of around 10-25 degrees. Generally, when the temperature is kept at around 15 degrees during its flowering period, it will bloom in about half a month. Winter jasmine loves an environment with plenty of light. It is necessary to prevent frost damage and scorching sun exposure. Generally, around the Spring Festival it should be moved indoors, and during the high-temperature and strong-light period in summer, attention should be paid to shading and sun protection.
3. Watering
Winter jasmine prefers a humid environment. Generally, around its flowering period, it needs to be watered more, keeping the soil moist, but there should not be waterlogging, otherwise it will cause poor root development. Generally, after fertilizing, it should also be watered once, which can promote the fertilizer to be absorbed by the roots as quickly as possible.
4. Fertilizing
When winter jasmine is grown in a pot, base fertilizer needs to be applied before potting. During the growing season, winter jasmine generally needs to be given 1-2 applications per month of fully decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer. In July-August each year, which is the flower bud differentiation period of winter jasmine, some phosphorus fertilizer can be applied. In the early flowering stage of winter jasmine, applying once a fully decomposed organic liquid fertilizer can appropriately extend the flowering period.
5. Pruning and Pest Control
During normal cultivation, pruning of branches and leaves should be done well. For vigorously growing branches, pinching should be carried out to maintain a good plant shape. In addition, attention should also be paid to the control of aphids, with regular spraying of omethoate or tobacco liquid for prevention and control.
II. Precautions
Before potting, the pot soil first needs to be watered thoroughly, then placed in a cool and ventilated place for 10 days of care. After it has slowly adapted to the pot, carry out semi-shaded care for one week, then resume normal care so that it can receive sufficient light. To extend the flowering period of winter jasmine, after flowering it can be placed in a suitable environment of 8-15 degrees, which allows the flowers of winter jasmine to grow and bloom better, but be careful not to let it be exposed to cold wind, so as to avoid the flowers dropping and withering.
