The Latest Freesia Cultivation Methods and Precautions Explained in Detail
Freesia is one of the more common indoor ornamental plants. Its leaves are like sharp swords, its flower colours are many, its shape resembles a lily, and its flowering period is extremely long. It can be cultivated as a cut flower and also grown in pots in a greenhouse, and it is deeply loved by flower enthusiasts. So do you know how freesia should be cultivated? Come and take a look with the editor.
1. Potting soil selection
Freesia has relatively high requirements for soil, and it grows best in sandy soil with strong drainage, looseness and fertility, and rich in humus. When potting, you can choose a mixed soil of leaf mould, garden soil, fine sand and decomposed organic fertiliser, and disinfect it once with a chemical agent before planting. When planting, it is best to use a shallow pot, because the roots of freesia are corms, which are different from other flowering plants. A pot that is too deep is not conducive to management, while a shallow pot can ensure it has enough space to grow.
2. Light and temperature environment
Freesia also has relatively high requirements for temperature, and growing at a suitable temperature is the basis for ensuring it blooms. The optimum growing temperature is 10-20 degrees, and at night 10-15 degrees. Maintaining a suitable temperature difference is extremely beneficial to its growth, and in winter avoid temperatures below 3 degrees. Freesia is a light-loving plant, so sufficient light should be maintained during the seedling stage, growth stage and flowering stage, but from March to April strong sunlight exposure must be avoided, because placing it in the sun makes the temperature too high, and once it exceeds 25 degrees it will cause its growth to slow down, so overly strong light is very unfavourable to growth.
3. Watering and fertilising
When potting freesia, you can add some base fertiliser appropriately to the bottom of the pot. Do not fertilise too much at the seedling stage. During the vigorous growth stage, it can be top-dressed once a month. It is recommended to apply decomposed bean cake water fertiliser, and during the flowering stage you can also spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate, which can promote flower bud initiation and make the flowers bloom more brightly. How to water freesia is a skill. Generally, watering once a week is enough during daily care. If the soil dries out too quickly, shorten the watering interval, and during the vigorous growth stage water once every 3-5 days.
4. Precautions
Common diseases of freesia include sclerotinia disease, mosaic disease and fusarium wilt, while the main pest is aphids. Diseases can be prevented and controlled by spraying 70% mancozeb 500-fold solution, 70% thiophanate-methyl and other chemicals, while for aphid prevention, daily management and care should be strengthened, and for control, a low concentration of aphid-killing solution can be used.
