The latest cultivation methods and precautions for the redbud
The redbud is a very beautiful flowering plant. It is not demanding about its growing environment and can be planted in gardens and scenic areas as well as made into a potted plant for people to grow. Many people in daily life want to grow the redbud but do not know where to start. Below, join us to take a look at the cultivation methods and precautions for the redbud.
1. Cultivation methods
1. Light
The redbud likes light. Only in a place with sufficient light can it grow vigorously. It has a certain degree of cold tolerance. In North China, adult seedlings can overwinter safely without any protection. However, in the hot summer, strong direct light must not be allowed to shine on the redbud, otherwise it is very likely to wither, so it can be moved indoors or to a shaded place.
2. Watering
The redbud likes a moist environment. After planting, water it thoroughly immediately, then water once more on the second day and once on the sixth day, after which it enters normal management. The subsequent watering frequency and amount should be adjusted appropriately according to the current climate. In principle, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, so as to avoid root rot from waterlogging.
3. Fertilizing
The redbud likes fertilizer. Only with sufficient fertilizer can it have luxuriant branches and leaves and bright flower colors. When planting, apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly leaf mold, barnyard manure, or dried chicken manure. Mix the fertilizer thoroughly with the soil to avoid the roots directly touching the fertilizer and being damaged. After that, apply a nitrogen fertilizer once each year after flowering to promote vigorous plant growth. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers help flower bud differentiation and the lignification of new branches, so they should be applied in autumn. In winter, apply organic fertilizer together with watering to ensure the plant overwinters safely. When the plant is growing poorly, a low-concentration mixed solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate and urea can be sprayed.
4. Pruning
The redbud has a strong ability to produce branches, so pruning is needed during the growing period to achieve the desired tree shape. After the seedlings are transplanted, they can be cut back to encourage more new branches to sprout. In the second year in spring, cut back again. After new branches sprout, select the 3 branches with better growth to keep, and cut off all the remaining branches.
2. Precautions
During cultivation, the redbud often suffers from some pests and diseases. Angular leaf spot, wilt disease, and so on are its frequently occurring diseases. Ordinarily, to reduce the occurrence of these diseases as much as possible. In autumn, diseased branches and leaves should be cleaned up in time and burned in a centralized manner, and during the peak period of disease occurrence, carbendazim fungicide should be sprayed. During the growing period, not only diseases occur, but pests also occur. For example, aphids, nettle grubs, and so on are frequently occurring pests. Cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate or 1605 diluted and then sprayed can all control the pests very well.
