The oriental lily, as its name suggests, is a type of lily with extremely high ornamental value and a very good flower language, making it popular with many people. It also has certain edible and medicinal properties, so it is now grown in pots all over our country. So how should oriental lilies be cultivated? And what precautions are there? Below, the editor brings you the cultivation methods and precautions for oriental lilies. Let's take a look!

1. Soil selection

If growing in open ground, we should first choose a well-aerated, semi-shaded plot for planting. The soil should have good permeability, a deep soil layer, and normal drainage and irrigation. Then make beds and prepare for planting, preferably in September-October. If growing in pots, a mix of sand, leaf mold, and garden soil can be used. Be careful to ensure the soil has good drainage, with the pH kept at around 6, slightly acidic. Never use hard, heavy clay soil, otherwise it will be very unfavorable for the growth of oriental lilies.

2. Propagation methods

Oriental lilies are commonly propagated by bulb division, offset division, and sowing. For sowing propagation, first make sure the seeds are fully mature; generally, the seeds are harvested around October each year and stored. Sow in the following spring at a temperature of about 10 degrees, usually after Qingming Festival. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water at about 40 degrees for 5 days, then stratify them in sand for about half a month. Then dig furrows and sow in rows, keeping the row spacing at about 15 cm and covering with 2 cm of soil. Seedlings emerge about one month after sowing; after emergence, set up a shade frame to ensure normal growth of the seedlings.

3. Daily management

During the growth of oriental lilies, be careful to keep the soil moist, but do not water too much, to avoid waterlogging that causes bulb rot. Then pay attention to fertilizing; oriental lilies have a relatively high demand for potassium and nitrogen fertilizers. During the growing period, fertilize about once every half a month, and be careful to control phosphorus fertilizer application, not too much, to avoid yellowing leaves. Finally, after the oriental lily blooms, cut the bulb off at the root to prevent excessive nutrient consumption. If you want to keep the bulbs, then about one month after fertilizing, dig out the bulbs, cut off the fibrous roots, and refrigerate them; after breaking their dormancy, they can be planted again.

4. Precautions

Oriental lilies have different light requirements at different growth stages. For example, during the budding stage, be careful to provide shading, and if the leaf temperature is too high, shade promptly as well. During the other growth stages, maintain a relatively strong light environment. Then be careful to control the temperature; within the first half month of growth, the temperature should be kept at about 5-10 degrees. Then raise the temperature appropriately; the temperature should not be too low. If the temperature is too low, it will reduce the growth rate of oriental lilies, but it should not be too high either, otherwise it will affect flower quality.
