Spring is the vigorous growth period for succulents. The temperature in spring is suitable, making it very ideal for succulent pest control, soil replacement, seedling transplanting, and so on. These tasks generally start being done once spring arrives. So how should succulents be cared for in spring? Follow along with the editor below to take a look at the spring repotting methods and precautions for succulents.

1. Washing the Plant

When you bring home a new succulent, you need to rinse off the soil carried by the root system, because it may contain a large amount of pathogens and insect eggs. When washing, pay attention to your technique and be as gentle as possible. Doing so will unavoidably damage the roots, but you should minimize root damage as much as possible. Generally speaking, put the succulent root system into water and sway it back and forth. Do not use a large stream of water when rinsing, as this is very likely to cause the roots to break. Simply shake and rinse repeatedly a few times. When you see white roots, it means the washing is done.

2. Root Trimming and Disinfection

After washing, the roots need to be trimmed. Generally, you need to cut off the blackened roots, as well as dead roots and diseased roots. For roots that have grown relatively long, you can also appropriately shorten them. In addition, for large numbers of tangled lateral roots, they also need to be trimmed. The purpose of root trimming is to promote the growth of new fibrous roots, and the newly grown roots will be stronger, making the plant grow more robust. After root trimming there will inevitably be wounds, so at this time you need to prepare a fungicide and soak the plant in the solution for one hour. You can choose fungicides such as carbendazim, chlorothalonil, or thiophanate-methyl, but the concentration should not be too high.

3. Potting

The substrate for planting succulents should be prepared in advance and also disinfected. The flower pot should also be sprayed once with a fungicide. Depending on the succulent variety, you can choose a ceramic pot or a plastic flower pot, or you can choose a porcelain pot, but the bottom of the pot must have holes to facilitate drainage. When potting, first put the substrate into the flower pot. The principle is large particles at the bottom layer and small particles at the upper layer. The particle size of the growing medium gradually decreases from bottom to top, which facilitates drainage. When covering with soil, the standard is to completely cover the roots of the succulent, and you should gently press the soil surface firmly, then spray a layer of fungicide on top, just enough to make the substrate slightly moist. This is beneficial for the sprouting of new roots.

4. Precautions

For succulents that have just been potted, they should be placed in a location with bright, indirect light for care. They should not be directly exposed to strong sunlight. In addition, the environment needs to be kept well ventilated, and watering should be avoided, so that they can safely get through the slow seedling period. After a week, resume watering and light exposure and enter the normal care stage. During the slow seedling period, if you feel the potting soil is relatively dry, you can spray a thin layer of water mist or fungicide on the soil surface every day. After the slow seedling period has passed, you must water decisively, otherwise the succulent may wither, become soft, or drop leaves due to lack of water.
