When Is the Bayberry Ripening Season? A Detailed Guide to Fruit Selection
I. When Is the Ripening Season
The bayberry is a common fruit. Its fruit ripening season is generally in the early summer, around May to June, so the harvesting and market time is about around the Dragon Boat Festival. The ripening time of bayberries differs by region. Where temperatures rise quickly and are higher, the bayberry ripening and harvesting time is slightly earlier. In some regions with lower temperatures, the bayberry ripening time is a bit later. The specific ripening time is determined by the local climate.
II. How to Select
Once bayberries are on the market, you can go to the market to select and buy them. Because the outside of the bayberry has nothing wrapped around it for protection, it is not easy to store. When selecting, be sure to choose ones whose outer color is purplish red, that look relatively plump and not shriveled, with evenly distributed round spines on the outside.
Feel with your hand that the firmness is moderate, not especially soft. Bring it close and smell it with your nose to sense a fresh fragrance, and avoid buying those that give off a faint alcoholic smell. Also look at the lower end of the fruit to see whether there are purplish red marks; once juice comes out, it means it has been stored a bit long. If conditions allow, you can wash it clean and taste it. This is a very direct selection method. After selecting and buying bayberries and taking them home, you can wash them clean before eating.
