The latest fertilizing methods for orchids, and what fertilizer is best
I. Fertilizing Time
Orchids actually need a relatively large amount of fertilizer. First, there is the fertilizer used when planting or repotting, called base fertilizer. Then there is the fertilizer used during their growing period, which also includes the fertilizer used during the flowering period, called top dressing.
II. Types of Fertilizer
The base fertilizer used when planting or repotting is mainly some solid fertilizer, which contains relatively more organic matter and is beneficial for later growth. The main type used for top dressing is liquid fertilizer, which can be bought directly from stores and used.
III. Fertilizing Methods
1. Solid fertilizer can be directly and evenly mixed with the soil when planting or repotting. The liquid fertilizer used for top dressing needs to be diluted with water, and the ratio of fertilizer to water can be controlled at about 1:200.
2. The frequency of fertilizing also needs attention. If the orchid is at the seedling stage, then it needs relatively less fertilizer, so it does not need to be fertilized too many times, about once a month. Adult plants need relatively more fertilizer, about once every two weeks.
3. In the early part of the growth stage, nitrogen fertilizer is mainly used, and during the flowering period, phosphorus fertilizer is mainly used.
IV. Precautions
In winter, if the temperature is below 10 degrees, the orchid will basically be in a non-growing state, and fertilizing should be paused at this time, otherwise it will harm the plant.
