A Detailed Guide to the Latest Styling Methods for Bonsai Ficus
1. Pinching
The main purpose of pinching is to control the growth height of the ficus. Pinching at a suitable height can promote the growth of its side buds and make the overall shape look more tree-like. At the same time, it is also limited by the size of the bonsai, so it cannot be allowed to grow freely.
2. Bud removal
The purpose of bud removal is similar to that of pinching, which is also to maintain the tree shape of the bonsai ficus and prevent it from growing a tangle of branches. Bud removal is generally done more frequently before the ficus has matured, and after it has matured, pruning is more often used instead.
3. Pruning
Pruning mainly consists of branch pruning and leaf pruning. Branch pruning is mainly aimed at some new branches, and whether to prune them is decided according to their growth vigor. Some branches look quite attractive when they first form, but after they grow out they no longer match the overall shape of the bonsai, so they should be cut off at this time. At the same time, forked branches, diseased and dead branches, and overly dense or long branches should all be cut off. The leaves should be pruned regularly to ensure that the branches can sprout new leaves, which will also make the color more vivid.
4. Root raising
Root raising is generally carried out after the tree shape has formed, and the styling is created by raising the roots. It is mostly done in autumn when repotting, appropriately raising the roots of the ficus above the bonsai.
5. Wiring
Wiring is a relatively professional operation. This requires a good preconceived idea of the tree's styling, and then using copper wire or aluminum wire to wire the branches and trunk so that it can grow into the shape you want.
