The latest techniques for making narcissus bloom at Spring Festival, so that one of China's top ten famous flowers blooms right on schedule
To control the flowering period of narcissus, you should first remove the brown outer skin of the narcissus bulb, then place it indoors in a warm, sunny and well-ventilated spot to sun it thoroughly, prompting it to after-ripen. During this stage the environment must be kept dry, so as to prevent the narcissus from sprouting prematurely:
The buds of the narcissus are phototropic; if sunned for too long, the buds will lean to one side and grow into lopsided buds. Therefore you should check frequently to avoid lopsided buds and keep the buds growing upright: in some cases the narcissus bulb is not sunned and is put into water culture too early;
in other cases the indoor temperature is too high or the light is insufficient, causing the narcissus leaves to grow leggy, so that a large amount of nutrients is consumed by leaf growth, and because of insufficient nutrition the flowers become thin, small and dull, and their fragrance becomes faint:; it can thus be seen that when growing narcissus in water, the temperature must be well controlled, and the narcissus pot must never be placed on top of a radiator.
When growing narcissus in water, take care to change the water frequently; it is best to change the water once every early morning. When changing the water, rinse the stems and leaves of the narcissus with water or spray and wash them with water; this both prevents the leaves from turning yellow and washes away the dust on the stems and leaves.
In the early stage, warm water can be used for changing the water, to help promote the growth of the narcissus; afterwards, well water or tap water can be used. If the narcissus opens too early, you can first wrap the flowers in soft paper and place the narcissus in a room at 5-10 degrees C, so that the narcissus temporarily stops growing: when you need it to bloom, remove the paper wrapping and place the narcissus in a room at about 15 degrees C, and the flowers will open naturally.
