Freesia is a perennial bulbous herbaceous flowering plant, with emerald green leaves, lovely blooms and a rich fragrance, making it one of the most common flowering ornamental plants for home pot culture. It can also be propagated into young plants from bulbs, much like planting garlic. But the soil must be chosen well, so what then?

As for what soil is better for growing freesia, we still have to prepare it according to its growth habits, see what soil it likes and what soil it is suited to grow in, and then prepare that kind of soil for it. According to its growth habits, we know that freesia prefers a soil environment that is loose and airy, strongly permeable and rich in humus.

It can be seen that freesia, like most flowering plants, has basic requirements for soil, and following this line of thinking, we only need to use a general-purpose soil for it. But in order to better promote its growth and meet its growth needs, we also need to prepare as high-quality a potting soil for it as possible.

First, on the basis of a general sandy soil, we can add some organic matter to it, which can provide it with more sufficient nutrients. In the later care process, this can play a role of getting twice the result with half the effort, reducing the burden of our management work, and at the same time ensuring that the plant can maintain vigorous growth.

Second, many flowering plants are afraid of waterlogging and have the characteristic of being intolerant of water; long-term water accumulation in the potting soil can easily cause root rot. For freesia, this is also the case, which is why we need to use soil that is well aerated, has good drainage and is strongly loose and airy. Because once watering is excessive, the potting soil is not prone to compaction, the drainage effect is good, and excess water can be easily discharged.

Third, freesia also has certain requirements for soil acidity and alkalinity; it prefers slightly acidic culture soil, and the ph value is best kept between 6-7. But the soil acidity should not be too high either, otherwise it is also not conducive to the normal growth of the plant; as long as the potting soil remains slightly acidic, it can meet its requirements for soil quality.

Having said so much, what kind of soil exactly should we prepare for freesia? Everyone knows that there are also many soil mix schemes that can satisfy the same conditions; generally we choose a relatively simple mixing method and mix it however is convenient. If growing it in a home pot, the editor suggests choosing a mix of sandy loam and coconut coir soil.

Of course, if it is not convenient for everyone to obtain coconut coir, we can also use peat soil and fine sand mixed in a ratio of 2:1, mix and stir them evenly, and then use it. But the simplest method, and the one where materials are relatively easy to obtain, is generally to use garden soil and leaf mold, then mix in some poultry manure as base fertilizer; the soil prepared in this way can all well satisfy the growth of freesia.
