Is a redbud tree easy to transplant successfully? Do it this way for a higher survival rate
Redbud transplants easily and can be moved in spring, autumn, winter or the rainy season. In spring, transplant before the tree buds; in summer, transplant after leaf fall or once leaf fall is complete; winter transplanting is only possible in the warmer regions of the south. During these periods, the redbud grows relatively slowly, so nutrients can be concentrated to supply the root system.
How to transplant a redbud
1. Spring transplanting
Redbud is suitable for transplanting in spring, after the soil thaws and before the tree buds. Although the tree has not yet budded after the soil thaws, the roots have already begun to grow; the roots have strong growth vigor and a relatively strong ability to adapt to the environment. At this time, the tree's life activities are still relatively weak and it will not consume large amounts of nutrients, which favors survival.
2. Autumn transplanting
Autumn transplanting should be done when the above-ground part is growing relatively slowly or has stopped growing, preferably at leaf fall or when leaf fall is complete. At this time the temperature drops, but the soil temperature is still relatively high, and the plant is about to enter dormancy; the nutrients it has accumulated can supply the growth of new roots after transplanting.
3. Rainy season transplanting
Rainy season transplanting is mostly used for coniferous trees in the north and evergreen trees in the south. During the rainy season there is plenty of water and relatively high humidity, which suits the growth of redbud; the transpiration of the seedling is relatively low, the roots grow quickly, and the vitality is relatively strong, which can improve the survival rate of plant transplanting.
4. Winter transplanting
Winter transplanting only applies to the warmer regions of the south; the weather in the north is too cold and not suitable for transplanting plants. Redbud is mostly distributed in the warmer regions of the south and can be transplanted in winter. In winter the seedling grows slowly, so nutrients can be concentrated to supply root growth.
