Pothos Propagation Methods and Precautions: A Complete Guide to Water Propagation, Soil Propagation, and Cuttings
Pothos can be propagated using the water propagation method or the soil cutting method. It is recommended to propagate from April to August, choosing a sunny, ventilated morning to do it. Note that the water used for water propagation must be clean and clear, and after propagation pay attention to the care work of moisture retention and ventilation.
1. Water propagation
The water propagation method is the most commonly used means in the process of propagating pothos. Select a 15~30 cm branch from a healthy mother plant, and cut off the leaves on the end that goes into the water. Choose a vase with a slender body, and after cleaning and disinfecting the pothos, insert it into it. The water level should reach two-thirds of the vase depth, and with normal care it will take root and sprout in about one month.
2. Soil propagation
Soil propagation of pothos basically uses the cutting method. Cut off a thick, strong stem node with a knife, and after cleaning and disinfecting, air-dry it, then apply rooting powder or carbendazim to the cut before preparing to insert the cutting. The soil medium can use loose, breathable plain sand or sandy loam. For pothos successfully propagated by soil cutting, spray water daily to retain moisture.
3. Propagation time
Pothos cannot be propagated at just any time; generally choose within April to August each year. The temperature during these 5 months is relatively warm, and rainfall is abundant with sufficient humidity, which can promote the growth of pothos and increase the success rate of propagation. It is best to choose a sunny, warm morning within the day to propagate, and avoid doing it under the hot conditions at noon.
4. Precautions
If tap water is to be used when propagating pothos in water, it should be left to stand for 1~2 days in advance so the chlorine can evaporate before use. No matter how it is propagated, keeping pothos moist is very important, and ventilation work must be done well to prevent pests and diseases. The pothos propagation methods and precautions are introduced here; we wish you success in propagating pothos plants.
