The potting soil of Hongdou brand yew is made from wild native soil mixed with nutrient soil. The soil is loose, high in organic matter, strong in water retention, fertilizer retention and air permeability, full of nutrients, and has a pH within 7. For bonsai kept for more than three months after purchase, fertilizer should be properly applied to the roots, once a year, best in spring or early autumn, generally using a compound fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium or an organic fertilizer.

Compound fertilizer is applied by watering, dissolved in water and then poured on, at a concentration of 0.5%-1%; organic fertilizer is applied by burying. To enhance the ornamental value of the plant, a foliar fertilizer such as monopotassium phosphate can be sprayed on the plant appropriately.

1. Application method of foliar fertilizer

Spraying concentration: Grasp the optimal concentration when spraying foliar fertilizer, and you can achieve twice the result with half the effort. If the concentration is too high, fertilizer burn or toxicity symptoms are likely to occur; if the concentration is too low, the purpose of fertilizing cannot be achieved. The optimal concentrations of commonly used fertilizers are: monopotassium phosphate about 0.3%-0.5%, 18 g-22 g per backpack sprayer.

Spraying method: Because nutrients are easily infiltrated and absorbed on the back side, when spraying, both the front side and the back side should be considered for contact with the solution. The standard is that both sides of the leaf are moistened by the fertilizer liquid without dripping. Only by covering both the front and back sides can the leaves absorb it quickly.

Spraying time: When spraying, the leaves are usually required to remain moist for a certain period of time, so that absorption is fast and the amount absorbed is large. It is best on a windless cloudy day or in the evening of a sunny day, to prevent the foliar fertilizer from being dried out quickly by wind, and spraying should be avoided when the sun is blazing.

Precautions: When preparing the solution, be sure to stir it evenly and use it immediately after preparation. Foliar fertilizer should not be sprayed too many times; spray once every 20 days.

2. Application method of rooting agent

Within one week after transplanting and watering, apply a rooting agent once. Apply it to the yew by irrigation, and prepare the application concentration according to the product instructions. Generally, 1 packet of 10 g rooting agent is mixed with one bucket of water (20 jin). For 1-3 years of age, pour half a spoon; for 4-5 years of age, pour 1 spoon; for more than 5 years, pour 1.5 spoons. The concentration of the rooting agent should not be too high; if too high, it easily causes hormone poisoning, premature aging of the plant and other adverse conditions.
