Is it better to use a deep pot or a shallow pot for planting osmanthus?
Many gardening enthusiasts like growing osmanthus in pots, because osmanthus is not only one of China's traditional top ten famous flowers, but its blooms are also quite fragrant, and when grown as a potted plant, its ornamental value is also very high. But if we grow osmanthus in pots, we must first provide it with the hardware guarantee it needs for growth, that is, the material basis for its growth, including potting soil and flower pots.
In previous articles, the editor shared with everyone what kind of soil and flower pots are suitable for potted osmanthus. But for potted flowering plants, planting depth also has an important effect on their growth. However, if planted deep, a deep pot is often needed; if planted shallow, a shallow pot is usually used.
As for whether it is better to use a deep pot or a shallow pot, it should be decided not only according to the size of the plant, but also with reference to how developed its root system is. Usually, the root system of osmanthus is relatively developed, but because the plant size varies, the flower pot we choose must also correspond to it. Generally, osmanthus can often be planted in either a deep pot or a shallow pot.
For larger osmanthus plants, their root systems are relatively developed, so a deep pot is generally used for deep planting; for smaller osmanthus plants, because their root systems are often not especially developed, we can consider using a shallow pot for planting. But whether a deep pot or a shallow pot is used, in principle it is required that the root system can spread freely inside the pot and will not be inhibited by the amount of space.
Not only that, for large osmanthus trees, using a deep pot for deep planting can not only obtain more space for root distribution, but also obtain more nutrients from the pot to promote growth, avoiding the impact on root distribution and absorption capacity caused by planting a large seedling in a small pot; for small osmanthus trees, using a shallow pot for planting is often more reasonable, not only because it is more conducive to root aeration and growth, but also because the water in the pot dries out relatively easily, avoiding water accumulation and root rot caused by using a large pot for a small plant, which makes the water in the pot difficult to consume.
Of course, in terms of the size and depth of the flower pot, we need to choose according to the size of the plant, but whether the texture of the flower pot is good will also largely affect the growth of the plant. Generally, we choose a clay pot with better permeability for planting, so that when overwatering occurs, it can ensure that excess water seeps down and drains away, and at the same time it can better allow the root system to exchange air and avoid suffocation.
Therefore, we cannot simply think that when growing osmanthus in pots, it is better to use a deep pot or a shallow pot; instead, we should consider the pot according to the size of the plant. When choosing a pot, the size, depth, and permeability must all be appropriate, so that the plant will not have its normal growth affected by an improperly chosen flower pot or improper deep or shallow planting.
