For drill grafting of camellias, the best time to graft is June to July each year, when the survival rate of the graft can reach over 90%. The scion should be a robust one-year-old branch, and it can only be grafted after being properly prepared. The rootstock should be a thick, multi-year-old tea plant; drill a suitable hole according to the size of the scion, and after inserting the scion, make sure the two fit tightly together.

Method of drill grafting camellias

1. Grafting time

For drill grafting camellia trees, the grafting time can be chosen from May to September each year, with June to July being the most suitable, as the weather is relatively warm then and most suitable for grafting camellias. After successful grafting, the survival rate will be relatively high, reaching over 90%, and the plant can adapt to the new environment more easily and quickly grow and sprout.

2. Scion selection

The branch used for grafting must be a vigorous one-year-old robust branch; only such a branch is relatively suitable for grafting. After cutting the branch, first remove the skin at the bottom to increase the contact area with the rootstock, then sharpen it, treat it with a special disinfectant, and let it dry in a ventilated place before starting grafting.

3. Grafting method

Generally, a thick, multi-year-old tea plant is chosen as the rootstock, then its upper part is trimmed flat, and a hole of suitable size is drilled according to the size of the scion. Then insert the scion, making sure the scion and rootstock fit tightly together, and finally wrap and secure the two together with grafting film. After about 2 months, it will survive and grow.
