The Medinilla magnifica is relatively easy to grow in the south, while in the north you need to pay attention to cold protection and warmth. This plant likes a warm and humid climate and has high light requirements; it cannot be exposed to strong light, and at the same time it needs sufficient scattered light, so it must be placed in a bright place. The soil should be loose and fertile, and must have good drainage. It has poor cold tolerance, and in winter the temperature must not be lower than 12°C, otherwise it will be frostbitten.

How do you grow the Medinilla magnifica?

1. The Medinilla magnifica likes slightly acidic soil rich in humus, loose and well-drained. You can add coarse peat and mix it with soil, which can make it grow better. Repotting should be done every spring, appropriately adding new soil and keeping the soil moist.

2. The Medinilla magnifica is suitable for growing in a semi-shaded environment with high temperature and high humidity and scattered light. In summer, direct sunlight must be avoided, and a shade net needs to be added, while in early spring and winter sufficient light is needed. Its optimal growth temperature should be maintained at 19-21°C, not lower than 16°C in winter, and the humidity should always be kept at around 80%.

3. During the growing period, the Medinilla magnifica needs to keep the potting soil moist; it can neither be drought-stressed nor waterlogged. When the temperature is below 20°C, water only after the surface layer of the substrate has dried. Note that when the Medinilla magnifica is in the flowering period, it should not be watered frequently, as this will cause flower drop and shorten the flowering period. In summer, in addition to normal watering, you should also frequently spray water on the plant and around it to increase humidity, which can also wash off dust on the leaf surface.

4. During the flowering period, the humidity for the Medinilla magnifica should not be too high. When the color of the flower buds changes, move it to a place with a slightly higher temperature to prevent bud drop. Its natural flowering period is from February to June; if maintained in a greenhouse, it can bloom all year round. In spring, apply more nitrogen fertilizer to the Medinilla magnifica, and in summer more potassium fertilizer, adding fertilizer once a week, while during the growing period the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium should be balanced.

5. When the Medinilla magnifica develops diseases such as leaf spot and stem rot, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder. For pests such as whiteflies and scale insects, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate.

The Medinilla magnifica is often propagated by cuttings, and sowing is also feasible. Cuttings are generally taken in June-July and September-October each year. Cut 15-18 cm tender branches and keep the upper 2 leaves, insert them into a peat substrate, and ensure a temperature of around 25°C. After 20-25 days they will take root, and after 40 days they can be transplanted into pots. After the Medinilla magnifica seeds mature in August, they can be collected and sown, or planting can wait until the following spring, but care must be taken to store them properly.
