Goldfish Plant Is Growing Too Sparse? Causes and Solutions
Gardeners familiar with the goldfish plant (Nematanthus gregarius), an evergreen flowering plant, are usually drawn in by its striking ornamental appeal, but growing this plant well is not an easy task, especially when keeping it as a houseplant, which requires us to master certain techniques. Otherwise, it will either grow poorly or be prone to various growth problems.
Indeed, some gardeners find that the goldfish plant they keep at home always grows weakly, with branches and leaves looking rather sparse, and even leaning every which way, which not only affects the plant's appearance but also greatly restricts flowering.
Everyone knows that to grow potted flowering plants well with good blooming, we first need to provide them with a suitable growing environment. For a goldfish plant that grows weakly and sparsely like this, to change the situation we must first check whether the care environment is suitable. And to provide a good growing environment, we must compare and improve it according to the plant's habits and characteristics.
The goldfish plant prefers fertile, loose, breathable and well-draining, slightly acidic soil, so we first need to check whether the potting soil has become compacted or salinized. If it is confirmed that the potting soil is severely compacted and salinized, then it must be repotted with fresh soil in time.
Not only that, the goldfish plant also likes a warm, humid growing environment with good ventilation, so promptly check whether the care environment meets these standards. Moreover, this plant likes soft light and cannot tolerate strong light, so lighting must be well controlled. It also likes warmth and fears high temperatures; when the ambient temperature is too high, it easily enters a semi-dormant state.
In addition, we need to check the water and fertilizer management. The goldfish plant grows relatively quickly and has strong sprouting ability, and during the growing season it has a relatively high demand for water and nutrients, so water and fertilizer must be sufficient to meet its rapid growth needs. But at the same time it cannot tolerate excess water or fertilizer, so watering should follow the rule of watering thoroughly only after the soil has dried out, and fertilizer concentration should be low enough to avoid damaging the roots.
If we want the potted goldfish plant to grow vigorously and its sparse branches and leaves to become more lush, then we also need to pay attention to pruning regularly. Generally, during the peak growing season, pinch or top it once every 10-15 days, which not only prevents the branches from growing leggy but also better promotes the sprouting of new branches.
Timely pruning is an effective means of promoting sprouting and growth in the goldfish plant, but for it to maintain rapid growth, water and fertilizer must keep up, so after pruning, fertilize in time to replenish nutrients. During the growing season, also apply some multi-nutrient fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium every 10-15 days, and to promote flowering, focus on applying phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as the flowering period approaches.
When the goldfish plant has a suitable growing environment and proper care, it will inevitably grow vigorously. Especially when it has grown rather sparse, the key is to focus on pruning and fertilizer management, which allows it to sprout and grow more quickly, soon becoming lush with branches and leaves, with a more compact and attractive plant shape, and it will be more likely to bloom abundantly.
