During the Chinese New Year period, many friends like to buy a potted kumquat tree and place it in a suitable spot at home to add a festive atmosphere. The kumquat trees on the market have already been potted by merchants, so we just need to spend money to buy them and take them home to care for. But the temperature during the Chinese New Year period every year is often still relatively low, especially in northern regions; even if the potted plant is not frostbitten, its beautiful appearance will be affected. So what temperature is suitable for a potted kumquat tree? What is its minimum cold tolerance?

In fact, the kumquat tree is a fruit tree with relatively poor cold tolerance. In the cold winter season, we need to promptly provide it with warmth and cold protection measures. The kumquat tree is not very afraid of heat, but when the temperature is too high it will enter dormancy and this will affect flowering and fruiting; it is relatively afraid of severe cold. After late autumn, when the temperature is below 10°C, it should be moved indoors for care. And in winter the ambient temperature should be kept between 6-12°C, because when the temperature is too low, frost damage is very likely to occur.

As an ornamental potted kumquat tree, we especially need to pay attention to warmth and cold protection in winter. Because when the winter temperature is too low, if warmth and insulation measures are not taken in time, once frost damage occurs, it will not only affect the appearance, but recovery will also be relatively difficult. Therefore, the winter temperature must never be lower than 5°C; that is to say, the minimum cold tolerance temperature of the kumquat tree is 5-6°C, and the plant should certainly not be placed outdoors. This is because the outdoor temperature in winter is generally lower than this critical temperature.

Of course, the fact that winter temperatures are low cannot be changed. We can only do a good job of warmth and cold protection measures to ensure that the ornamental potted kumquat tree passes through winter safely. Although the outdoor temperature in winter is relatively low, we also cannot keep it indoors for the whole winter, because indoor light is often relatively weak, and the plant likes a warm growing environment with sufficient light.

In view of this, on sunny days in winter, especially when the temperature at noon is relatively high, we can move the plant outdoors so it can fully receive light to promote photosynthesis and growth. But if the outdoor temperature is still very low even when there is sunlight, especially in northern regions, where even on sunny days the outdoor temperature may be below 0°C, then it is still not suitable to move it outdoors.

Since the potted kumquat tree likes warmth and light, and on sunny days when the temperature is too low it is not suitable to move it outdoors, what should be done? In that case, we can still let it stay indoors. After all, we cannot let the plant be damaged by cold just to let it receive light. We can move it to a place indoors near the windowsill, as long as it can receive as much light as possible.
