Can Phalaenopsis Be Grown in Coconut Shell? Analysis of the Latest Planting Method
Phalaenopsis has fleshy roots and likes loose, breathable substrate, but it is also not tolerant of waterlogging, so the substrate we prepare is usually also required to have strong water permeability and not easily cause water accumulation in the pot, otherwise it will not inhibit the root respiration of Phalaenopsis, and at the same time will also cause root rot in Phalaenopsis.
Everyone knows that coconut shell not only has strong water permeability, but is also very breathable, and itself also has a certain ability to absorb and retain water. Perhaps many gardening friends think coconut shell can be used directly to grow Phalaenopsis. But in fact, coconut shell cannot be used directly for growing Phalaenopsis. Why is that?
This is mainly because coconut shell chunks are relatively large in size and are too loose when placed in the pot, leaving too many and too large gaps, so the rooting effect of Phalaenopsis is poor, which naturally leads to poor root growth. If coconut shell is indeed to be used for growing it, it is also not recommended to use it alone, but together with other planting materials such as peat soil and leaf mold.
In this case, peat soil or leaf mold can be placed in the lower layer for Phalaenopsis to take root, and coconut shell can be spread on the upper layer. In this way, too many and too large gaps will not be created around the roots of the plant in the pot, which is more conducive to the growth of its root system and will naturally improve the root's ability to absorb.
Of course, it is usually recommended to replace coconut shell with coconut coir, and then mix it with planting materials such as peat soil to prepare a mixed substrate for use as potting soil for Phalaenopsis, which often works much better. In this way, not only is the potting soil high in looseness and strong in breathability, but a lot of nutrients can also be obtained from the soil. If only coconut shell is used to grow Phalaenopsis, it is generally not easy to grow Phalaenopsis well.
