Why Does the Schefflera Keep Dropping Leaves? Causes and Solutions
Schefflera, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree, is a fairly ornamental evergreen plant that is very appealing when kept as a potted plant displayed indoors. However, sometimes it may also drop leaves because our care and management are not up to standard. Why does an otherwise healthy potted plant keep dropping leaves?
If the Schefflera keeps dropping leaves, it may be caused by two factors. One is that you rush to water the Schefflera right after buying it, while the plant happens to be in its acclimatization period; watering too early will trigger leaf drop. It is best to place it in a ventilated spot with plenty of scattered light and let it acclimatize for about a week, and during this period do not move it around frequently; then gradually give it an appropriate amount of water, which can reduce leaf drop.
The other factor may be that the Schefflera's placement is not well chosen. If the environment is too shady and lacking light, or if direct light is fairly strong, then it will likewise cause a large amount of leaf drop. Although the Schefflera has a certain tolerance for shade and also likes a bright environment with half shade and plenty of scattered light, being in too shady a spot lacking light for a long time is not good for its growth.
If direct light is too strong, it is also bad for its growth, first of all because it goes against its requirements for light. But in this situation, we also cannot move it all at once from a state of direct light exposure to a place with weak light. Doing so will often only worsen the plant's leaf drop and do no good for its recovery. Instead, we should gradually reduce the light and let it slowly adapt to the process.
Of course, besides the two situations above, it may also be caused by other reasons, such as improper water and fertilizer management, which can still cause leaf drop; especially in the case of root rot, it will not only drop leaves but also develop yellow leaves, dry and withered branches and leaves, and in severe cases may even lead to death. Therefore, in our daily care, we must pay attention to methods and watch the plant's growth state more, then take scientific care measures, so as to ensure the plant does not drop leaves and can also grow with lush branches and green leaves.
