Will potted narcissus freeze to death in winter? A detailed guide to overwintering methods
I. How to overwinter
1. Maintain temperature: Narcissus likes a cool climate. Although it has a certain cold tolerance, it cannot withstand prolonged low temperatures. Winter temperatures in northern regions are relatively low, so it must be moved indoors in time, especially hydroponically grown narcissus, with the temperature kept above 5-10°C. In southern regions, narcissus does not need to be moved indoors, but a layer of film should still be covered to provide protection against the cold. It usually blooms in January-February. After buds appear, keep the temperature above 10°C to ensure blooming.
2. Appropriate light: Light is also essential during growth. It can be placed in a bright location, giving it about 6 hours of sunlight per day. It must not receive insufficient light.
3. Appropriate fertilizing: In winter, narcissus is still in its growth stage, so fertilizing cannot be omitted. It can be fertilized appropriately, and a little phosphorus fertilizer should be applied before blooming.
4. Ensure water temperature: When changing the water for narcissus in winter, the water must be kept at a good temperature. After drawing the water, let it sit for a while, and change it once the water temperature is similar to room temperature.
II. Will it freeze to death in winter
Narcissus has a certain cold tolerance. As long as correct care methods are taken, it will not freeze to death in winter. If hydroponically grown narcissus is kept in a subzero environment for a long time, it may suffer frostbite and freeze to death.
