Peonies need shade in the afternoon during summer, because plants have a midday rest phenomenon in the high temperatures of summer, entering dormancy and closing their stomata, so they cannot use excessive light energy. But they do not need shade all day; peonies prefer light, and only under light can they carry out photosynthesis and produce enough nutrients.

Do peonies need shade in summer

1. Afternoon shade

Summer temperatures are high, especially around twelve to two in the afternoon. Although peonies love light, they cannot tolerate excessively high temperatures. In the summer afternoon the plant enters dormancy, closing its stomata, and cannot use excessive light energy. At midday in summer you can move the peony indoors, and when the outside temperature is slightly lower, around three or four o'clock, move it back out.

2. Peonies love light

Peonies do not need shade all day in summer. Peonies prefer light, and only under light can they carry out photosynthesis, produce enough nutrients, and promote flower opening and flower quality. If kept in a dark place, peony growth will be hindered and it may even fail to bloom. Apart from the hot afternoon, keep sufficient bright light at all other times.

3. Never expose to blazing sun

Receiving light does not mean placing the peony directly under the sun, but rather receiving scattered light or diffused light in a sunny spot. Long-term direct blazing sun will make the soil surface temperature too high; excessively high temperatures will scorch the root system, and will also raise the surface temperature of the leaves, causing rapid water loss, resulting in scorched leaves and withered flowers and foliage.

4. The role of shading

Proper shading can lower the temperature in summer, reduce the transpiration rate, and prevent excessive evaporation of water from within the plant. It can also maintain the plant's normal respiration rate and photosynthetic rate, making more reasonable use of light energy. The photosynthetic rate within the plant is limited; excessive light exposure will instead increase the plant's burden of consuming light energy.
