Growing kalanchoe in pots usually involves repotting; whether it is root rot caused by excess water and fertilizer that requires root trimming and repotting, regular repotting needed after long-term pot cultivation, or timely repotting needed for newly purchased plants, in short, there are many reasons for repotting a kalanchoe, and the situations vary. Whether the repotting method is appropriate will directly affect and even determine the length of its recovery period and whether it can successfully adapt to the new pot.

How to water potted flowers and plants after repotting has long been a difficult problem in the eyes of many gardening friends, especially beginners. If we do not water it, the plant will be unable to adapt to the new pot because it lacks a suitable humidity environment; if we water it, the plant may become infected due to wounds. Generally, after repotting a kalanchoe, it needs to be watered thoroughly once as a settling water, and then no more watering during the recovery period.

However, sometimes due to root rot and other reasons, after root trimming and leaf pruning before repotting, we generally use moist soil for potting, so after potting there is usually no need to water thoroughly. During the recovery period, it is also not suitable to water too early, otherwise it may affect the process of recovery and adapting to the new pot.

In fact, to water a repotted kalanchoe normally, generally you need to wait until the plant has smoothly completed its recovery and successfully adapted to the new pot before resuming watering. Since its roots temporarily lose the ability to absorb water during the recovery period, if we water frequently, it is easy to cause water accumulation in the pot and new root rot, ultimately preventing the plant from smoothly adapting to the new pot, or even causing it to die quickly.

Therefore, regardless of whether we have watered the kalanchoe with settling water after repotting, it is not suitable to water it during the recovery period. Everyone should not worry that the kalanchoe will dehydrate and wither, because it is relatively drought-tolerant and not water-tolerant, so not giving water for a few days during recovery usually will not cause it to wither. On the contrary, watering too early will bring risks of rot, but we also cannot continue without watering it forever, otherwise over time it will dehydrate and die.

How long after repotting a kalanchoe should you water it? Generally, you can water only after it has smoothly adapted to the new pot. The speed of adapting to the new pot and the length of the recovery period are related to many factors. In fast cases, it may successfully adapt in 3-5 days; in slow cases, it is hard to say, perhaps 1 week, or 2 weeks, or even unable to smoothly complete recovery. Under the most ideal circumstances, it still takes at least 2 days to smoothly complete recovery. So, watering it can be done at the fastest only after 1-2 days, and generally after 3-5 days, waiting until the plant's leaves begin to stand upright and resume growth before watering.
