What are the latest methods for getting dragon fruit to grow flower buds?

Dragon fruit not only blooms beautifully but also bears fruit, so it can be enjoyed as an ornamental and harvested for eating, and its stems and leaves are upright and strong, so when grown in a pot its ornamental value is very high. And when dragon fruit grows flower buds, it means it is about to form buds and grow bracts, followed closely by flowering and fruiting.

So what should be done?

To get dragon fruit to successfully differentiate flower buds, three basic conditions need to be met: temperature, humidity and nutrients. When all three conditions are met, it will basically differentiate flower buds successfully. Let's take a look at these three conditions below.

1. Temperature requirements

Temperature is one of the guaranteeing conditions for flower bud differentiation, but different varieties of dragon fruit have different temperature requirements during flower bud differentiation. Dragon fruit generally begins to differentiate flower buds around March in spring, and a temperature steadily maintained at around 20°C is most suitable. If the temperature is below 15°C, apart from a few varieties that can successfully differentiate flower buds, the flower buds of most varieties will turn into branch buds.

2. Humidity requirements

Dragon fruit tends to differentiate flower buds more easily in warm, humid conditions with plenty of light and smooth ventilation. Whether flower buds or branch buds, they are all closely related to humidity. Dragon fruit is moisture-loving and drought-tolerant, and to get it to differentiate flower buds successfully, we need to appropriately raise the environmental humidity. So, in addition to watering in time, if the air humidity is too low, we should also spray water more often to maintain moisture.

3. Nutrient requirements

Although the root system of dragon fruit is not very developed, it grows quickly and consumes a lot of nutrients when flowering and fruiting, so its demand for nutrients is also relatively large, and therefore it has the characteristic of being fond of fertilizer. Before the flowering season arrives, we should prepare enough nutrients for it, and it is recommended to apply a little more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. In this way, after it has accumulated enough nutrients during the vegetative growth period, it can smoothly switch to reproductive growth and successfully differentiate flower buds.
