Green beans can be planted in both spring and autumn, and are deeply loved by growers, and are widely planted in both northern and southern China. On the Chengdu Plain, early-spring green beans can be sown after February 10 and harvested in mid-to-late April. Other places can choose a suitable sowing time according to temperature levels and local planting habits. For 667 sq m of green beans, the seeding rate is 4 kg, with 3000 hills planted (4 seedlings per hill), a yield of about 3000 kg, and an output value of about 3000 yuan.

Variety Selection

For planting green beans in early spring, choose varieties with cold resistance, strong disease resistance, high yield, and good quality.

Soil Selection

Green beans have low soil requirements and can grow well in both loam and sandy soil. They can be planted in any field with good drainage and irrigation, but fertile soil can produce a high yield.

Seedling Raising Techniques and Seedling-Stage Management

1. Because green beans have strong cold tolerance and do not need high temperatures (temperatures above 25°C affect flower bud differentiation), green bean planting generally uses greenhouse seedling raising and small-tunnel transplanting.

(1) Seedling raising time. For planting in small tunnels, sowing can be done around February 10.

(2) Bed preparation. First break up the soil of the seedling bed finely, and make a bed surface 1.2 m wide with furrows 20 cm deep; the bed length can be determined according to the sowing quantity. Water thoroughly to saturate the bottom soil, then smooth the surface with a sand board, snap lines 9 cm wide with nylon string, and then cut 9 cm × 9 cm squares with a knife, and use the knife to make a 1-2 cm deep hole in the middle of each square.

(3) Sowing

① Seedling raising: Sow 4 seeds in the hole of each square and cover with a handful of fine soil. In fields with underground pests, use 1000-times diluted phoxim when watering. After completing one bed, spread a layer of plastic film flat on top, cover with a small tunnel, and remove the plastic film after the seedlings emerge from the soil. If there is sun, the small tunnel can also be opened. When the seedlings grow to 2 true leaves, they can be transplanted into small tunnels (if not using small tunnels and only using plastic film, sowing and transplanting can be 10 days later).

② Direct seeding: Green beans can also be directly sown in the field, but the sowing time should be postponed until after February 25. Make beds 1.4 m wide in a field that has been fertilized, and with a hill spacing of 35 cm-40 cm, sow two rows per bed directly (seedlings 20 cm from the bed edge), place 4 seeds per hill, and then cover with soil. After sowing, spread plastic film flat on top, press the edges down with soil, and after the seedlings emerge, tear a hole in the plastic film aligned with the seedlings and guide the seedlings out. If the soil is relatively dry, first dig the holes, pour in clear water, and sow the seeds after the water dries.
