How to Propagate Chinese Mahogany (Toona sinensis)? A Detailed Guide to the Latest Propagation Methods
Because the leaves of the Chinese mahogany tree (Toona sinensis) are edible, many gardening enthusiasts want to grow one themselves, but since most people now live in cities, buying seedlings is not easy, so propagating from an existing Chinese mahogany tree is the best choice. Currently, the propagation methods for Chinese mahogany include seed sowing, root sprout division, root cutting, and stem cutting propagation.
Seed Propagation Method for Chinese Mahogany
If uniform growth of Chinese mahogany seedlings is desired, seed sowing is the most effective method and also the most commonly used one. Seedlings grown from sowing have a distinct taproot and grow vigorously. Before sowing, the seeds should first be soaked in water at 20°C-30°C for 12 hours. After soaking, remove them, rinse clean with fresh water, and place them in a bag to promote germination, maintaining the temperature at around 25°C. Once the seeds have sprouted, they can be sown. Sowing is generally carried out between April and May, and by autumn and winter the seedlings can be transplanted. When raising seedlings, watch out for the occurrence of root rot.
Root Sprout Division Propagation of Chinese Mahogany
Dig a trench around the canopy, and cut roots about 1 cm in diameter to stimulate the growth of root sprouts. When cutting the roots, take care not to damage the larger roots as a principle. After cutting, cover with soil, and add decomposed organic fertilizer as appropriate to promote the growth of the root sprouts and the plant. About 2-3 root sprout seedlings can be produced each year.

Take roots about 0.5-1 cm in diameter and cut them into cuttings 10-15 cm long, with the thicker end flat-cut facing upward and the thinner end slant-cut facing downward. The cuttings can be soaked in a 0.4% butyric acid solution diluted 1000 times for 30 minutes, or dipped in 0.1% BA powder before cutting. Insert the treated cuttings deeply into a sand bed. To maintain a temperature of 25°C-30°C and a humidity of 75%-80% RH, cover with transparent plastic sheeting. After sprouting, keep only one bud per cutting. Once they grow to about 30 cm, they can be transplanted.
Stem Cutting Propagation of Chinese Mahogany
Cutting propagation is generally carried out from April to June. Take current-year, semi-lignified branches and cut them into pieces about 15 cm long, then insert them into a sand bed. To increase the survival rate, the cuttings can be soaked in a 0.4% butyric acid solution diluted 1000 times for 30 minutes to 1 hour, or dipped in 0.1% BA powder before cutting.
