What to Do About Aphids on Peppers? A Detailed Guide to Scientific Control Methods
Aphids are one of the most destructive pests on Earth, also known as plant lice, honeydew insects, and so on. They include all members of the superfamily Aphidoidea. So far, about 4,400 species of aphids have been discovered across 10 families, of which about 250 species are serious pests in agriculture, forestry, and horticulture. Now let us take a look at what to do about aphids on peppers!
Damage Characteristics
Pepper aphids gather as adults and nymphs on the undersides of host leaves, tender leaves, flower stalks, and pods, sucking plant sap. Affected leaves turn yellow and curl, and the plant becomes stunted and grows poorly; in severe cases it may even wilt and die. In addition, aphids are also vectors of many viruses, causing outbreaks of viral diseases in melons and vegetables and leading to severe crop yield losses.
Morphological Characteristics
Pepper aphids are small, with a body length of about 2.1 to 2.3 mm. Their color varies greatly, including green, light yellow, dark green, purplish brown, and orange-red, some with a thin white powdery coating, and some with a black head and thorax. There are many types of individuals in their life history, with both sexual reproduction and parthenogenesis, which makes species distinction relatively difficult.
Life Habits
When aphid population density is too high, or when plants age or grow poorly, large numbers of winged aphids appear and migrate and disperse, spreading with the wind and expanding the scope of damage. Winged adults have a strong tendency toward yellow and a negative tendency toward silvery white. They live in warm, dry environments. When the temperature is 18 to 25°C and relative humidity is below 75%, they can reproduce in large numbers. Late spring to early summer and autumn are peak periods of damage.
Control Methods
1. Clean the field: Remove weeds in and around the field to reduce pest sources.
2. Covered cultivation: Use the negative taxis of aphids toward silver-gray to achieve the purpose of avoiding aphids and preventing disease.
3. Yellow trapping: Use the taxis of aphids toward yellow to set yellow sticky traps in the field and trap and kill winged aphids. The yellow board is 1×0.2 m in size, with machine oil applied to the yellow part. Insert it between pepper rows, 60 cm above the plants, and place 30 boards per mu.
4. Chemical control: At the initial stage of occurrence, use 10% Gaoxiaodagongchen wettable powder at 1000 times dilution, or 50% pirimicarb wettable powder at 1000 times dilution, or 10% Duolaibao emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, or 10% Chongmanling at 3000 times dilution, or 50.5% Nongdile at 1500 times dilution, or 47% Lorsban emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, etc., alternating them, once every 7 to 10 days, for 2 to 3 consecutive applications.
