Latest Pea Seed Prices and a Detailed Guide to Growing Methods
Pea is also known as green pea, cold pea, wheat pea, etc. It is an annual climbing herbaceous plant of the genus Pisum in the Fabaceae family. It can be used as grain and as a vegetable. It originated in the Mediterranean and Central Asia regions, and is now one of the world's important cultivated crops. In China it is mainly distributed in the central, northeastern and other regions, and it has extremely high cultivation value. Now let us take a look at pea seed prices and growing methods!
How much do pea seeds cost?
The market price of pea seeds varies with variety and quality, generally around 8-15 yuan per jin. At present, the more common varieties include Tiancui, Caoyuan 31, Jingyin 8625, gray pea, Zhongwan No. 8, etc. Seed shapes are divided into round grains and wrinkled grains. When planting, dense planting is required. One mu of land needs about thirty jin of seeds, and the yield per mu is about 300-400 jin.
What varieties of peas are there?
1. Tiancui: The plant is dwarf. Each plant bears 10-12 pods. The tender pods are light green, crisp and tender in texture, and sweet in taste. Each pod has 6-7 seeds. It is relatively early-maturing, usually beginning to harvest tender pods about 70 days after sowing. It is suitable for planting in North China, Northeast China, East China and Southwest China.
2. Caoyuan 31: The plant is vining. Each plant bears about 10 pods, and each pod has 4-5 seeds. At maturity, the 1000-grain weight is about 250-270 grams. It is not sensitive to daylength and can be cultivated in most parts of the country. It has strong adaptability and is relatively resistant to root rot and brown spot disease.
3. Jingyin 8625: The plant is dwarf, with a plant height of about 60-70 cm and 1-3 branches. The tender pods are thick in flesh, crisp and tender in texture, and of excellent quality. Each pod has 5-6 seeds. At maturity, the seeds are green, with a 1000-grain weight of about 200 grams. It has strong adaptability and a long harvest period.
4. Gray pea: The plant is dwarf. The seeds are round, with a 1000-grain weight of about 140 grams. At 20-25°C, seedlings can emerge 2 days after sowing. The seedlings grow vigorously, and the leaves are tender and crisp with excellent quality. It has wide adaptability to temperature and can be cultivated under both low and high temperatures. It is suitable for intensive production of pea shoots.
5. Zhongwan No. 8: Each plant bears 7-11 pods, and each pod has 5-7 seeds. It is early-maturing, with a yield of 400-500 kg of green pods per mu. It is drought-resistant and strongly cold-resistant. It is suitable for planting in North China, Northeast China and Northwest China. It can be used as green peas, sprouts, and also as grain or feed.
Sowing methods for peas
1. Seed selection and germination: Before sowing pea seeds, use 40% salt water to select seeds and remove the floating, unfilled or pest-damaged seeds. Before sowing, the seeds must be germinated. When the seeds sprout, place them at a low temperature of 0-2°C for 15 days before sowing.
2. Mixing with rhizobia: Mixing pea seeds with rhizobia is an effective measure to increase yield. After mixing with rhizobia, there are more pods and higher yield. The mixing method is to use 10-19 grams of rhizobia per mu, add a little water, mix evenly with the seeds, and then sow.
3. Timely sowing: Before sowing peas, apply fully rotted manure, compost and phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. Sow in holes, with a row spacing of 10-20 cm and a plant spacing of 5 cm, with 2-6 seeds per hole. When the soil is moist, cover with 5-6 cm of soil; when dry, cover with slightly thicker soil. Use 10-15 kg of seed per mu.
Management techniques for peas
1. Reasonable crop rotation: Peas should not be continuously cropped. Continuous cropping can cause toxic effects on the following pea crop and aggravate the occurrence of diseases and pests. Usually, they should be rotated with other crops. White-flowered varieties are even more unsuitable for continuous cropping, and their rotation period needs to be longer. They can be mixed-cropped and intercropped with other crops.
2. Loosening soil and weeding: After sowing peas, shallowly loosen the soil several times to increase ground temperature, promote root growth, and make the seedlings robust. For autumn-sown cultivation, carry out one hilling before overwintering to keep warm and prevent freezing. After spring begins, loosen the soil and weed in time to increase ground temperature.
3. Reasonable fertilization: Before peas bloom, water lightly and topdress with quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, then loosen the soil to preserve moisture. When pods begin to set on the stems, slightly increase the amount of watering and topdress with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. During the peak pod-setting period, the soil should be kept moist regularly, and watering should be reduced in the late pod-setting period. Begin staking when the plant height is 30 cm.
4. Disease and pest control: The main diseases of peas include root rot, brown spot disease, powdery mildew, brown streak disease, etc. The main pests include black leafminer, leafminer, etc. The editor has already explained this in more detail in the article "Pea Disease and Pest Control Techniques." 5. Timely harvest: The harvest time of peas is determined according to the method of consumption. Grain peas are harvested when the seeds are plump 15-18 days after flowering; dry peas are harvested when 70-80% of the pods are withered and yellow; vegetable peas are harvested 12-14 days after flowering when the tender pods show seeds but not distinct grains.
