Xiao Huang ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Zingiberaceae family, genus Zingiber. It has a strong spicy taste, fine fibers, rich ginger oil, and a delicious flavor. It is cultivated in many parts of the country, but the climate of the 27 degrees north latitude zone is very suitable for the growth of Xiao Huang ginger, and the yield is relatively high, with a good market reputation. Now let us take a look at the price and planting methods of Xiao Huang ginger!

How much is Xiao Huang ginger per jin?

The price of Xiao Huang ginger is about 5 to 8 yuan per jin, but it varies depending on the quality, place of origin, market, and season of the Xiao Huang ginger. Ginger has varieties such as small-seed ginger and large-seed ginger. For medicinal use, small-seed ginger is preferred. People are accustomed to calling small-seed ginger “Xiao Huang ginger”. Xiao Huang ginger has a pure yellow cut surface, a strong spicy taste, tender and fragrant flesh, and relatively fine fibers. Large-seed ginger, on the other hand, has a grayish-yellow cut surface with an iron-like color, relatively coarse fibers, and is inferior to small-seed ginger in both spiciness and fragrance, with weaker medicinal effects, and is suitable as an ingredient for stir-frying.

Sowing methods for Xiao Huang ginger

1. Land preparation and fertilization: Xiao Huang ginger is not suitable for continuous cropping. Sandy land with deep soil layers, loose fertility, and convenient drainage and irrigation should be selected for planting. Before sowing, apply 1000 to 1500 kg of farmyard manure, 50 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, and 20 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer, then divide into beds and open furrows.

2. Carefully select ginger seeds: Before sowing Xiao Huang ginger, ginger seeds should be carefully selected, removing moldy, rotten, and shriveled diseased and weak ginger pieces. It is best to choose ginger pieces of 50 to 100 grams with 1 to 2 strong buds. Ginger pieces that are too large should be cut with a knife or split open, but the wounds should be disinfected with plant ash or lime.

3. Soaking seeds and promoting sprouting: Before sowing Xiao Huang ginger, spread the seed ginger out to dry in the sun for 1 to 2 days, then soak the seeds in Bordeaux mixture at 1:1:120 for 10 minutes. After removing, stack them layer by layer with moist sand, cover them well with plastic film, and keep the temperature at 20 to 30 degrees C. Buds will appear in 8 to 10 days.

4. Sowing method: Sow Xiao Huang ginger by grade according to the size and strength of the buds. Use 300 to 500 kg of seeds per mu. After the furrows and holes are prepared, place the ginger seeds obliquely with the buds arranged in one direction, cover with fully decomposed farmyard manure or soil manure, and then cover with a small amount of soil.

Planting methods for Xiao Huang ginger

1. Watering and drainage: After sowing Xiao Huang ginger, if the soil is moist, no watering is needed for seedlings to emerge. If the soil is dry, water once, but not too much. After emergence, irrigate in a timely manner according to soil moisture and plant growth. During high-temperature periods, early and late watering should be promoted, and during the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage.

2. Intertillage and earthing up: When Xiao Huang ginger seedlings are about 15 cm tall, combine intertillage and weeding with earthing up. Topdressing should mainly be human excrement and urine. Afterward, each time a seedling emerges, apply fertilizer once and earth up once. The thickness of the earthing up should not bury the seedling tips. Earth up 3 to 4 times in total.

3. Reasonable intercropping: Xiao Huang ginger is afraid of strong light. When planting, it can be planted alone or intercropped. Intercropping between ridges can make use of tall trellised crops such as melons and beans for planting underneath. It can also be intercropped between corn rows, and shade sheds or inserted branches and wormwood stalks can also be used for shading.

4. Timely topdressing: Xiao Huang ginger is generally topdressed twice. The first is from early June to early July, applying 20 kg of compound fertilizer and 10 kg of urea per mu. The second is from early September to early October, applying 30 kg of compound fertilizer and 10 kg of potassium chloride per mu.

5. Pest and disease control: The insect pest of Xiao Huang ginger is the corn borer. The main diseases are ginger blast and anthracnose. For ginger blast, spray agricultural streptomycin, Yeqingshuang, or Bordeaux mixture at the early stage of the disease. For anthracnose, use thiophanate-methyl plus carbendazim. For corn borer, use trichlorfon plus insecticide.
