Eggplant is a common vegetable on our dining tables, with countless ways to prepare it. Many people love it, yet few know how it is grown. Eggplant is cultivated in both northern and southern regions and is one of the main summer vegetables. Below, QinNong Network brings you the planting times and methods for eggplant. Let's take a look.

Planting Time

Eggplant is an annual herbaceous plant that is fairly sensitive to temperature, with an optimum growing temperature of 20-30 degrees, so it is suitable for planting in spring and autumn. For spring planting, seeds can generally be sown in January-February, and harvest takes place from April to June; for autumn planting, seeds are sown in July-August, and harvest takes place from October to December. Of course, with the continuous development of planting techniques, temperature can be controlled artificially, so many vegetables can be grown out of season. This can also increase their economic value.

Planting Methods

1. Seed Selection

After years of cultivation and breeding, eggplant has produced many varieties. When choosing, we should adapt to local conditions. For example, in some areas with a higher average annual temperature, varieties with good heat tolerance should be chosen for planting; conversely, in areas with a lower average annual temperature, cold-tolerant varieties should be chosen; in some areas with more rainfall, rain-tolerant varieties should be chosen; but regardless, the chosen variety must have good disease resistance.

2. Soil Selection and Land Preparation

Choose soil that is loose, rich in fertility and well-drained, preferably in a spot with ample light. Deeply plow and sun-expose the soil, and build raised beds more than 30 cm high, with 1.7 m for double-row planting and 1 m for single-row planting.

3. Sowing

Eggplant can be sown in spring and autumn. Spring sowing is in January-February, and autumn sowing is in July-August. Of course, sowing is also affected by regional climate changes. Generally, the seeding rate is 15-20 grams per mu.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

Eggplant also has relatively high requirements for water and fertilizer. During the seedling stage, apply fertilizer lightly, and fertilize according to plant growth, but do not apply concentrated fertilizer, otherwise it will damage the seedling roots or cause excessive vegetative growth. During the pollination period, if the plants are not severely deficient in fertilizer and water, generally no fertilizer or water is applied. When the fruit is as large as an egg, fertilizer and water should be applied promptly to promote rapid fruit expansion, but when the fruit changes color, stop fertilizing, though watering is still needed, keeping the soil moist at all times.

5. Field Management

In order to reduce nutrient consumption by the plant and allow it to produce more flowers and fruit, during the bud stage, remove side branches that have no buds. When fruiting, use supports to prop up the plants to prevent them from lying on the ground and to avoid rotten fruit.

The above are the planting times and methods for eggplant brought to you by QinNong Network. When planting eggplant, in addition to strengthening fertilizer and water management, in order to ensure the quality of its fruit, off-type plants in the field are usually removed during the pollination period to avoid poor fruit caused by cross-pollination. After pollination is completed, remove self-pollinated fruits on the female parent plants and the male parent plants.
