Lettuce is also known as mai-zi-cai and goose-zi-cai. Just as its name suggests, it is a vegetable that can be eaten directly. It tastes sweet and has a crisp, tender texture, making it a common leafy vegetable on our dining tables. So when is the planting time for lettuce? Below, Qinongwang brings you the planting times and methods for lettuce.

Planting Time

Lettuce is delicate in appearance, so the planting time should avoid extreme heat and severe cold. It is generally sown and planted in spring and autumn. Lettuce grows extremely quickly and has a short growth cycle. Generally, it can be harvested for eating one month after transplanting. Spring sowing is in March-April, and autumn sowing is in July-August. It can now also be grown out of season through greenhouse methods.

Planting Methods

1. Seed Selection

Choose varieties with strong disease resistance and vigorous growth. Currently, the three popular varieties on the market are curled lettuce, glass lettuce, and head lettuce. You can randomly choose one to plant.

2. Seedbed

Before sowing, first prepare the seedbed for raising seedlings. The seedbed soil should be loose, fertile organic soil. You can also mix ordinary loose soil with organic fertilizer and ammonium sulfate, then water the soil thoroughly once.

3. Sowing

Lettuce seeds are very small and light, so they need to be mixed with sandy soil and then evenly scattered on the seedbed. Cover with 0.5-1 cm of soil.

4. Raising Seedlings

After sowing, keep the seedbed temperature between 12-20 degrees, maintain ventilation, and avoid direct exposure to sunlight. When the seeds germinate and grow two or three leaves, they can be transplanted.

5. Transplanting

Lettuce has a weak root system, so when transplanting, the seedlings must be lifted together with the soil. When transplanting, keep row spacing and plant spacing at 4x4 cm. After transplanting, apply fertilizer once, then water thoroughly once.

6. Harvesting

As long as there is sufficient fertilizer and water, lettuce will grow extremely quickly and can be harvested in 1-2 months. Be careful and cautious when harvesting to avoid damaging the roots, because otherwise it will not be able to continue growing.

The above are the lettuce planting methods and planting times brought to you by Qinongwang. Growing vegetables is extremely simple and does not require much careful maintenance. We hope this can help you.
